“A positive surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2007

We stayed at the Radisson Europa beacuse the hotel was selected as the venue for a Central American/Caribbean international training. We combined it with some days vacation before and after.

We found the inner garden around the swimming area gorgeous. Water was cold, and did not invite to swimming, but when sunshine, sunbath on the beach chairs was pleasant. The gym opened already at 5 A.M. and closed 8:30 P.M. We did not need to wait long for a "jogging path" and the combination of a commercial Gold's Gym in a hotel seem to be a good feature.

Staff in the Reception was very kind and helpful, but were not willing to explain the bus system of San José. There is a bus stop on Calle Central near the back gate of the hotel for the bus to/from Tibas, which takes you close to the Avenida Central for 150 colones. To get a taxi, do not ask the hotel. Find instead one outside on the street. Going from Radisson to the Downtown area costed us 800 colones (USD 1,6) with a meter taxi, when the taxis at the hotel entrance wanted USD 4 for the same trip.

Complimentary coffee, tea and fruits in the lobby and the free wireless internet everywhere in the hotel are giving competitive advantage compared with other hotel chains, who charge for everything.

You have to be patient with the Central American un-systematic way to make up the room. Some days no shampoo, other days flowers in the room, the next day no coffe or tea bags for the coffeemaker.

As a summary we found the hotel convienient for business as well as for our vacation days.

  • Liked — Breakfest, inner garden, gym, lobby area, wireless internet access
  • Disliked — Lack of local visitors information (maps, bus information, taxi rates, tour offers)

“Good for business but not much else”

The Radisson is a large CBA (Could Be Anywhere) hotel. There is nothing to make you feel like you are in Costa Rica - you may as well be in downtown Toronto. Here are some of the drawbacks: (1) the rooms have windows that will not open, and no balconies -- so the rooms are VERY dark and dreary; this struck me as an odd design choice since San Jose is fringed by mountains and there are beautiful views all around; (2) the pool was absolutely freezing - it could not have been more than 65 degrees; (3) the hotel gym is actually a popular Golds Gym where locals work out in droves -- the crowds in the evenings made it impossible to use the gym (mornings were better); (4) the location is not ideal and the staff made it clear that it was not safe for guests to walk outside the hotel's gates. On the bright side, the staff were VERY friendly and helpful, the internet wireless worked like a dream, and the hotel is clean and generally comfortable. This would be a good hotel for business, but I would not recommend it for vacationers.

“Disappointing at Xmas time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2007

I am used to stay in Radisson hotels when travelling in North Europe and always got a feeling of the reputed Northern quality ( clean, modern, functional, with all facilities and details that make the difference,...). Radisson San Jose is a nice hotel from the 70's (with large concrete walls) with very large rooms and bathrooms, and also a lot of facilities. However, Xmas time is a dead period, and then , the hotel closes all the facilities : no fitness, no sauna, no whirlpool, swimming pool was not cleaned, bar opened lately. Even lights in the entrance were switched off. A coffe machine and biscuits were available in the lobby. On the food side, we tested the smallest restaurant at lunch : we had some eggs which were burned ! and the tamale had very few meat and not too much taste. On Xmas eve, we got a good piece of cake, however.

Also, when we made the reservation, nothing on the website indicated that most facilities were not functioning. And the manager was not there to take our complaints. Not a very good choice at that period of time.

  • Liked — The room size (king size bed, two seats, desk, TV,...), nice decoration and very clean
  • Disliked — all facilities closed or not functioning due to low non -business season (Xmas time). lack of light and old 70's building

“Nice Hotel w/ 24 Hour Casino”

This is good place if u want reliable chain hotel w/ good service. It's large hotel and caters to business travel w/ large conference rooms. It's not w/in walking distance any place in SJ, but it has 24 hr casino. SJ is not interesting or worth your time. Go directly to beaches if possible. Go to El Pueblo in SJ for dining/shopping/nite life. Rooms are clean and new looking but not spectacular.

“Not bad...not bad at all”

This unassuming hotel located in San Jose is not expensive and is worth the money you pay. Staff are quite polite and helpful and there are nice touches such as complimentary tea and coffee in the lounge. The rooms while nothing to shout about are very spacious and clean.
In any case you'll probably spend so much time outside the hotel exploring the gorgeous countryside, this hotel will work for a inexpensive good night sleep.
