We stayed at the Santo Tomas several times, it was our base in Costa Rica. Every time we where warmly welcomed. Once you enter the hotel you can forget the crowded, busy streets of San Jose. The rooms are quiet big, a little dark, but that's ok. In the pretty little patio there´s a very clean swimming pool and even a hot tub that overlooks the whole patio. The restaurant serves excellent food and if you choose the Casado, it's a very fair not to say cheap price.
The staff, especially of the restaurant, are very friendly.
I can recommend the hotel to everybody!
You get a lot for the price!

I stayed here 7 nights on 4 different stops in San Jose. This place oozes with character; from the high ceilings to the hand painted tile floors. Great location within walking distance to most downtown sites and restaurants. While the neighborhood to the north is a little sketchy we never had any issues with safety.

We were in Costa Rica for the first time and felt very warmly received at Hotel Santo Tomas. The owner, Tomas Douglas, is very hospitable as are the staff. The people at the front desk are very helpful. The location is central, close to the main points of interest.

The appearance, from the outside, is somewhat deceiving but, once inside, it is a well maintained and renovated 100 plus year old mansion. Each room has its own character and rooms are priced accordingly.

The restaurant serves a nice meal and the staff, again, are friendly and helpful.

Hotel Santo Tomas is just a few short blocks from the centre of San Jose, and main attractions are within easy walking distance. Our (standard) room was clean and comfortable, and all the public areas in the hotel are immaculate, with highly polished floors and great attention to detail. Dinner in the restaurant was a real treat, and very reasonably priced, and all the staff, following the excellent example of the owner, went out of their way to be helpful and to make our time in San Jose happy and productive. Hotel Santo Tomas gives great value for money and we would certainly recommend it to experienced travellers looking for an authentic Costa Rican hotel.
