“Better than other San Jose Options”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2011

After being was frustrated with what $150 would get us at the Gran Hotel, my hubby and I wound up here on the first night of our honeymoon. The room was bigger, with AC and a TV, as well as a nice, clean shower. The view an hotel staff were pleasant.
The restaurant was cute, but the staff was surly.
It stayed pretty quiet all night.

Honestly, if we hadn't gotten lost looking for the bus terminal, we would have just left San Jose that first day. If you don't want smog, anger and noise on your trip, skip the capital.

“Adequate but could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

We stayed here as part of an organised group shortly after flying into San Jose and also the night before we departed. On both occasions we were allocated reasonably sized rooms, well equipped including A/c, modern bathroom, safe and coffe machine. Both rooms were noisy- the first from streetnoise and the second because it was located off the main lobby right by the front door. The breakfast served in the cellar restaurant was adequate but compared unfavourably with other places on the trip. The hotel is located in a slightly edgy area, but we had no problems going out at night. There is a good restaurant (Arte et Gusto) and Bar (Speak Easy) in the immediately adjoining street. The staff were friendly and competent. Overall the hotel served its purpose; no more.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your comment, we really sorry for the street noise, but is not easy keep out the noise from the city when we are in it.
by the way we tell you we are improving in many aspects of the hotel, one of them is that our breakfast is better.

“OK for overnight if you HAVE to stay in San Jose”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

A so-so hotel in a terrible city. Very simple accommodations. No AC, twin beds, armed guard out front and a very limited restaurant/bar. I can't imagine any place in San Jose Costa Rica being very good, so this will do for an overnight stay if you start your vacation in San Jose. It was clean and simple. The staff were very nice. There is a grocery store 2 blocks up the street on the right, we were able to get food and water to get us through until we left San Jose. We were advised not to walk around San Jose at night, so we also skipped the strip club across the street too-Ha ha! Request a room off of the street to be quieter and safer.

“Could do with a revamp”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

Our room was on the ground floor, and did have a window, which faced onto the veranda and main street. The street outside was busy with trafffic late into the night and early in the morning. The furnishings were old and dated, and the net curtains looked like they hadn't been washed in years, the same could be said for the bed quilt too. The towels in the bathroom were quite threadbare. The breakfast was served in a dingy basement, and consisted of a meagre portion of fruit, and a small amount of dried up scrambled egg. The waitresses were quite sullen. Would rather have stayed somewhere else, but this hotel was arranged through our tour operator Kuoni. Luckily it was only for a couple of nights, but it didn't make for a nice, restful place to unwind after a long flight.

Bario Amon is a neighborhood where all the old coffee barons use to live and the neighborhood is full of old mansions that have been converted into restaurants, hotels, and shops. Our Hotel is Situated in a Victorian area, In Barrio Amon; Hotel has been declared a national heritage house and also a section of our restaurant is a cellar .

“Creepy atmosphere in a bad location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

We traveled with a flexi drive program with over 100 motels/B&Bs to choose from all over the country. This was their first choice to pre-book our first night. It was full so they booked us at the Fleur de Lys (which was great...I wrote a review of it also). When we returned to San Jose at the end of the trip, we booked this place and were not happy.

The hotel itself had a creepy dead atmosphere. We were put in a basement room that had no windows. The restaurant is completely covered in dust and WAY over priced (even if you are used to paying US hotel prices). It is across the street from a gothic club that really gets going on Saturday night (the only night we were there). There is also a strip club across the street. We had to walk back to the hotel after sunset and we were fine, but it certainly did not feel as safe as other areas.

The room was clean enough. It was small but sufficient. The bed was nice.

Thanks for your comments,

El Barrio Amon met a party of the bourgeoisie, therefore became the first fashionable neighborhood of San Jose. They built their elegant houses in many styles: Victorian, eclectic, neoclassical and Moorish, among others.

Currently, some residents still are, some are employed by hotels, restaurants and antique shops, always keeping its original elegance.

Britannia have a Victorian style in building and furnishings, and about the restaurant, its a Cellar, a wine cellar, The bottles must be horizontal, and the wetting of cork stoppers is permanent, which provides sealing., and the bottles have to be at rest, so have a thin layer of dust.
