“EXCELLENT PLACE, GREAT HOSTS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

A group of 8 of us stayed at the Blue Banyan Jan 5-9 2012. Our group stayed in both the cabins as well as the larger and newer 3 story building. Unlike the reviewer 'Kallins' we had a lovely stay in the 3 story building. It was incredibly clean, well furnished, and an excellent place for a family. Jim and Barb told us about the negative TripAdvisor review and the complaints from the previous guests; thankfully our group had a problem free stay. We would recommend staying in the 3 story building, especially if you're a larger group and want some living room and kitchen space (brought pizza back, played board games, and drank beer in the living room).

The cabins were nice and had all the basic amenities (AC, good beds, very nice spacious hot shower). They were a very good value at ~$120. Yes, you might find a bug or ant here and there, but hey, this is Costa Rica!

Breakfast was excellent! Banana pancakes were awesome! Hosts (Jim, Barb, and Chip) were very friendly and helpful. They had plenty of recommendations for us. (Ask about the deserted beach at El Rey if you're up for some adventure).

Great place for birdwatching. We had a few birders in our group, and they had a great time roaming the grounds. Also get a tour of the monkey rehab facility they have down the road. Pia and Pablo the resident vets for the facility, showed us the monkeys they are taking care of - they were very knowledgeable and friendly.

Overall great peaceful and secluded place. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Room Tip: Cabins are good for couples, the larger 3 story building is good for families or groups

“We Returned Again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We had such a fabulous time the first time we visited and returned with our friends. Barb and Jim are great hosts and so likable. We missed them this time as they were on their own vacation (they work hard with the monkeys they rehabilitate and deserve their vacation). We were the first guests after a few weeks of no guests (we were told as we arrived during low season) and the rooms were not up to Barb and Jim's high standards as before. They needed some sprucing up (cobwebs, sheets that didn't smell musty) and that was addressed the next day. The volunteer lodge was being built and being birders, the construction disrupted our peaceful birdwatching (but is supposed to be completed now). We saw Tanagers, honey creepers, Parrots, hummingbirds and many other birds (best views of these are at Cabin 2).There are beautiful mountain views and a gardener tending the landscape that is worked on regularly. With our friends, we enjoyed the clean pool almost privately. Some of the lights were burned out and our skittish friends were afraid to swim in the dark areas because of some of the toads that kept jumping in (I thought it was funny). The pool was refreshing, private (you don't get this at a big hotel), under the stars, with the sound of crickets and frogs. I thought it was terrific, and will be a favorite memory!! The maid made the breakfast and we thought she did (almost) as good as Jim during our first visit. Chip, the brother, worked hard to make sure we got a rental car, tours, and we found him and his wife very accommodating. We enjoyed eating in the restaurant at their hotel (The Blue Monkey), getting a massage they arranged and picking up our rental car there. The pet Macaw at Blue Banyan was quiet this time...probably because he missed the owners. We sat on our balconies at night and in the mornings and during our 3 day stay saw two rainbows. We enjoyed seeing the monkey rehab. The internet wasn't working for us either, but this area is very humid and unkind to computers. As for the bugs another reviewer wrote about...this IS the jungle. We are invading their areas and can expect them to attempt to try to visit our accommodations. You can't beat Blue Banyan Inn for the setting, the views, the peaceful sounds and it is a modern way to enjoy a jungle setting. We felt safe the whole time because there is a guard nearby 24 hours per day. We would be happy to return a 3rd time.

Room Tip: Birders would love the 2nd cabin best.

“Restful Blue Banyon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We stayed two nights in early January and found Blue Banyon enjoyably restful. There are three identical cottages. Simply decorated, and with unique stone showers. The beds -- well, they could be more comfortable -- and down comforters with duvets would be a great addition. I really dislike bedspreads -- knowing they aren't washed between guests. That said, sitting in rocking chairs on the porch was lovely -- and no bugs even after dark! Breakfasts aren't gourmet -- not much of a selection, but the banana pancakes are very good. We spent most of the day at Manuel Antonio (go to the 2nd beach after you've seen the monkeys at beach #1). Then we did a catamaran trip with snorkeling in the afternoon. Blue Banyon is away from the craziness of the town of Manuel Antonio -- so if they is what you want, then Blue Banyon is for you. Ask to see the monkey rehab center -- very cool.

“A quick note of thanks for outstanding service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

My husband and I were excited about our plans to travel to Costa Rica, but due to a family emergency, had to cancel our entire trip, including our stay at the Blue Banyan Inn.

I want to thank the Blue Banyan for helping us as we rearrange our travel plans. I can't imagine booking a stay anywhere but here when we are able to complete our journey to Costa Rica and the Quepos area. Thanks to Chip and the owners for being so understanding.

“Was not as expected”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Unfortunately our stay at the “Blue Banian Inn” was not as expected.
Having said that the location is very nice and quiet, the structure and his owners disappointed us.
Our cottage looked shabby as the rest of the structure and a good clean at the hole place was needed.
The first evening we discovered that we could not keep the light on for the patio, and windows absolutely closed, with us forced to stay inside the cottage. The reason for this is that nearby a storm of flying bugs have a nest. The cottage was shortly covered by these bugs, looking for a way in.
We where told that hundreds of DVD’s where available, pitty that 70% where missing and what was left was in terrible conditions.
Internet point with two PC which clearly needed maintenance. Extremely slow connection and printer unable to print for exhausted toner.
The bigger surprise was yet to come when after finding a dead insect in my bed, i decided in the morning to tell the owners if they coudl change the bed sheet. Their reply was positive and asked sorry for what happened. When we arrived in the evening at our cottage, i found that nothing was done, so by phone i called the owner Barbara asking her to take care immediatly of the issue. Barbara arrived with her husband accusing me of being rude on the phone, and started shouting at me throughing the pillows and mattress on the floor. Fotunately Barbara asked her husband to go away.
When checking out i was told that i could only pay by cash because they didn’t have a credit card facility.
In all the B&B i stayed during our honey moon in Costa Rica, the “Blu Banian Inn” surely deserves a negative feedback.

It is very unfortunate that our guest had a very bad experience at the BBI. As with all our guests we try very hard to make your stay a memorable one in a most positive sense. Unfortunately, in this case, it just didn't happen. On arrival our guest was very upset about his previous accomodation in Costa Rica and we soon realized that we were going to be placed in the same category. We will not respond to his complaints as they simply are not true. We try to meet everyone's expectations but in this case no matter what we tried to do, it just wasn't enough. We deeply regret that our guest did not like his stay at our lovely Inn. Barb and Jim ( Owners)
