“A Very Special Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Travel
Didn’t have to worry about anything. We were picked up at the airport at Puerta Jimenez and driven to the lodge. We were given an opportunity to stop at a grocery store before reaching the lodge in case we wanted our own food or supplies. I didn’t find that we needed anything. The road to the lodge is bumpy, but I found it to be one more piece of the trip that added character and was part of our adventure. The drive to the lodge is beautiful and we saw wildlife every time. There are also several great views of the ocean, farms and very cool river crossings. We were driven around the Osa Penensula by the BDC staff most every day. They looked out for us like we were family and were always friendly.

Housing
Manglillo Deluxe Cabina
Our Cabina was about 100 yards in front of the main dining area/pool/bar. We were right above the ocean and had a beautiful view of the Pacific.
Our cabina was very intimate. We had a King size bed with two full beds in the loft. We had a wooden porch that wrapped around and two hammocks that faced the ocean.
I loved the outdoor shower. We took showers almost every night under the stars. I have never seen so many stars in my whole life.
The mosquito netting around our bed was romantic.
I loved the fact that someone came every day and cleaned the room and changed the sheets. There is something great about getting in bed every night to crisp, clean, and cool sheets. My wife and I didn’t have a problem with bugs. We saw a few ants but that was about it. You have to remember that you are in the middle of a rainforest and there is wildlife all around you. It is what makes this place special and you can go to a hotel in your hometown whenever you want. This is a once in a lifetime experience.

We were woken up several mornings by birds or monkeys. I did not find it to be an annoyance. I usually grabbed by camera and tried to get pictures of whatever was there. We left our shutters open and an orange glow filled the bedroom every morning because of the sunrise. There are shutters that cover all of the doors and windows. Many of the windows also have screens. You yourself can make the room as open or as closed up as you want.

Meals
The food was amazing! Breakfast and lunch are off of a menu. I found that the menu changed so that I could try something new every day. We loved the breakfast selection, especially the banana pancakes. The staff is very accommodating about your wishes. My wife would ask for chocolate chips to be added to her banana pancakes most morning.
The lodge has wonderful coffee, every morning in the dining area. I loved getting up early and making coffee my way and walking the property with a cup of coffee and camera or binos.
The dinners were served buffet style. We ate many of our meals with the owners, Kim and Phil. We met couples from all over the world. It was a lot of fun to eat amazing food and talk to others about their travel experiences or activities from the day.

Utilities
Kim and Phil truly live a life that reflects their concern for the environment at the lodge. They produce all of their own electricity on the property. They use solar panels and have a hydro/electric generator. We did not have any issues with access to electricity or electrical outlets. I routinely charged my camera batteries, I-Pad and Go Pro batteries nightly at our room. They have WiFi access in the library sitting area that is above the main dining hall. We used the WiFi to Scype our kids at night and my friends used face time on the cell phones most days.

Climate
We were at BDC during the 3rd week of January. We stayed for a week. I believe that this is the beginning of the dry season. We did not have any rain. The weather was perfect, 70’s and 80’s. There was a very nice breezed coming off of the ocean and a subtle sound of waves crashing, which is wonderful to wake up to every morning.

Activities
We did something every day. We took a short truck ride to the Backwash beach and swam in the ocean. The water was a pretty blue green. We also swam in the stream that is below the zip line platform. This was one of my favorite things to do with friends and family. We went hiking every day. We enjoyed the information that Phillip provided on the primary rainforest tour. I would suggest doing this 3-4 hour walk early in your vacation so that you can appreciate and love your surroundings even more. We went horseback riding on the beach and took stand up paddleboard lessons. We also loved waterfall repelling and the zip line. You actually get to repel down four separate waterfalls. The 4th and largest waterfall is amazing.
My 2 buddies and I went deep-sea fishing. We fished around 15 to 20 miles out for several hours and then fished closer to the shore for several hours. We caught five fish that we brought back to the lodge. The fish was prepared for us and the other guests that same night.

Hiking
Make sure that you hike the pacific trail. It takes a little planning because of the tide. It also has a few steps that get you down to the beach. Easy to go down and harder to get up. This trail takes you down to a beautiful beach on the pacific side. It is not a beach for swimming because of the rocks and strong waves. But it is a beach right out of a post card. We asked the staff to pack us a bag with two bottles of wine and glasses. We wore bathing suits and found several tidal pools to sit in and drink wine. You can walk further down the beach past the rock area and find a path that leads to a beautiful waterfall.

Staff
The staff was very friendly and laid back. I learned a lot about their lives and culture just by spending time with them. It’s the first trip or vacation that I have taken where I wanted to spend just as much time with the staff as I did enjoying the surroundings. The people at the lodge added so much to the experience. I can’t wait to go back and see how they are doing.

Thank you Kim and Phil for giving us one of the best weeks of our lives. I will never forget it and I can’t wait to see you guys again.

“We love this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We have stayed at Bosque del Cabo both times that we were fortunate enough to travel to Costa Rica. It was recommended by a friend and now we recommend it to everyone traveling to that part of the world. Phil and Kim are terriffic hosts and their staff goes overboard to meet your every need. Can't say enough about the food!!! I think we had 10 course dinners every day we were there - I took pictures of the evening menu board because no one would believe the choices available.
We enjoy photography and at Bosque you will have all the beauty of the rain forrest/jungle with amazing flowering plants, and birds and animals galore. Our trip this past Chiristmas we saw peccarys, frogs, toads, bats, at least 3 different snakes, agoutis, coatis, all 3 of the 4 varieties of monkeys, and more birds than we could identify - all on the property of Bosque!
This part of the country is still pristine - no crowds of tourists/traffic/ etc, and Phil & Kim are committed to preserving the rain forrest and the habitat while providing the best possible way for humans to enjoy it and not destroy it.
We definitely plan to return

“Paradise on the Pacific”

I are not sure now how many times we have stayed at this wonderful Eco Lodge, but suffice it to say more than 8 times and it always feels like our home in the rainforest. We have tried others around, but they aren't the same. The unique combination of incredible privacy and diverse animal populations can only be found in a nurturing environment like this, and you will not find better trails and animal sightings anywhere else on the Osa. The owners, Kim and Phil, have been able to acquire a large enough reserve (800 acres+) to sustain true diversity, and you truly sense their devotion to the conservation of this incredible eco-system. (please check out their continued efforts to create a wildlife corridor to connect the Corcovado National Park)

There is another important aspect that many 1st time travelers to the rainforest may not consider before booking: Most of the cabinas and houses at Bosque are situated on a precipice overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and have a luxurious breeze a great deal of the time. Not only is this appealing visually, but it affords the guests a comfort hard to find in most "rainforest" lodges. There is a wonderful Pacific Trail comprised of hundreds of steps leading down to a pristine beach that is like arriving in paradise. If you take full advantage of the trails, you won't need to worry about eating all of Chef Maureen's incredible, healthy creations!

This year we stayed in the newly renovated Casa Blanca, perfect for 2 couples with 2 bedroom suites adjoined by a common kitchen/living area and huge deck jutting out toward the
Pacific. One needn't leave the deck to see Titi monkeys, parrots, macaws, and an array of species. The last 2 days of our stay, the large Ficus (fig) began fruiting right outside our house. We only needed to walk out front to see hoards of spider monkeys with many babies riding on the mother's backs, howler monkeys, toucans and the fearless capuchin monkeys.
(You may even spot a big cat looking for some unsuspecting peccaries if you are quiet!)
All of the houses and cabinas we have stayed in are of great quality, good linens, outdoor showers connected to the bathrooms and the ubiquitous hammock for your pleasure.

ALERT!!! If you don't really care about wildlife, natural wonders, intense darkness and bright stars, the pounding of the ocean surf, and the alarming sounds of howler monkeys at 5 am...please leave your carbon footprint at a big hotel with intense air-conditioning, multiple swim-up pool-bars and watered-down cocktails! This experience is for the open-hearted traveler seeking to experience one of the most diverse eco-systems on the planet, respectfully and with awe...

“Adventure meets luxury!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We just returned from a week's stay at Bosque del Cabo and I must say that it far exceeded my expectations. I often use TripAdvisor as a resource, but have never been compelled to write a review until now. The lodge is absolutely beautiful and the staff goes out of their way to make sure that you're confortable and well taken care of. We stayed in a deluxe cabina and were very comfortable all week long. It's a truly unique experience to have the sun slowly creep into your room each day and hear the rainforest come to life. The outdoor showers grew on us and after a day or two we were in complete awe of the night sky above us. The food was one of my favorite things about the trip. Fresh and very delicious each and every day. The activities that were offered were more than enough to keep us busy each day and we genuinely enjoyed each one, but with the miles of trails on the property, you could find your own adventure without the cost. If you love nature and have the desire to experience the diversity of the rainforest then this is the place to do it. You're completely exposed to the natural beauty of the forests in the Osa Peninsula, but when your ready for a little luxury, you can belly up to the poolside bar for a cocktail and then enjoy an amazing meal prepared by the resident chefs. After that, the forest and the night sky provide all of the entertainment that you'll need.

With all of this being said, you must have a sense of adventure and a love of nature to truly appreciate and enjoy Bosque del Cabo. The owners and staff go out of their way to deliver top notch customer service and genuine hospitality to each and every guest. For me, that went a long way and it was truly appreciated. This was the first time that my wife and I have experienced a "nature lodge" and we are sure to visit Bosque Del Cabo again because it definitely made a lasting impression on us!

“Fabulous remote getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Bosque del Cabo is the perfect place for anyone who wants to get intimate with wild, untamed and remote nature and who has a hearty appetite for adventure. While it has most of the amenities that anyone could wish for, the primary appeal of the lodge BdC is its location... it's smack dab in the middle of one of the world's most pristine rainforests, and has miles of fabulous trails to its name as well.

We stayed for 5 nights over the Xmas Holidays - 3 nights at the Manglillo Cabina (a deluxe) and 2 at La Paz, a garden cabina. Manglillo, as with all deluxe cabinas, is very spacious and has a deck with a view of the Ocean as well as monkeys, birds and other wildlife from time to time. La Paz, on the other hand, is located in a beautiful garden area, is about a 10-minute walk from the main lodge and requires the crossing of a suspension bridge. The La Paz room itself is much smaller than the Deluxe Cabinas, and there are no walls on 3 sides of the room. In my opinion, La Paz is not for the faint of heart! Walking back to the cabina in the evening is a pretty creepy affair - a hike through a pitch black forest, followed by the suspension bridge - all with ZERO lighting along the pathways. Even with a flashlight (which you'll definitely need!), your heart will skip a beat the first few times you take the trek at night. Furthermore, you are completely exposed to the elements in La Paz. Although all three open sides can be closed by rolling down a tarp (of sorts), they don't completely seal the room. In fact, it doesn't come close - huge gaps everywhere. What's worse is that a pond is located nearby the cabina, resulting in way more mosquitos buzzing about the cabin than elsewhere.

The hiking trails within BdC are exclusive to its guests, and are stupendous! If you spend your time doing anything here, you must hike the trails. An awesome variety of them, too - through lush primary and secondary forests, to beautiful waterfalls, to amazing vista points with views of the ocean, and two of them even take you down to the beach. The sights and sounds are so awe-inspiring that you'll find yourself walking very slowly, stopping every few steps to soak in the atmosphere or listenening, in hushed silence, for the sounds of tree or ground creatures scurrying about the jungle. We had heard from others that the Titi Trail is the best trail for wildlife spotting, including the holy grail... the Puma. Well, within 10 minutes of walking the trail we saw not one but TWO Pumas! A male and a female, shoulder to shoulder, looking straight at us about 30 feet away and in plain sight. Luckily, I had my SLR on standby and was able to snap a few clean pictures of the fabulous felines.

For first-timers who'd like to take a leisurely stroll while getting a crash course of the Osa Peninsula, BdC offers a very nice Primary Forest walking tour with the lodge's resident biologist Philip, who does a great job explaining the inner workings of the Osa's fragile ecosystem. There is also an evening tour (also led by Philip) in search for nocturnal creatures such as bats, snakes and spiders. Finally, Carlos (a terrific guide) hosts a one-hour morning bird watching tour that is also not to be missed.

There are many other activities available, including horseback riding, waterfall rapelling, dolphin watching, a trip to the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary (many people rave about it, we didn't think much of it), fishing, surfing, kayaking, mangrove river cruise and much more. Feel free to try them out, but if you're pressed for time, be advised that hiking is BdC's main attraction, bar none, and what separates it from other lodges nearby (including Lapa Rios.)

Food - what else can I say but, WOW. Everything is fresh, delicious and healthy. Not too heavy, and not too light. Breakfast and lunch are a-la carte, while dinner is buffet style (with a ton of options.) We looked forward to each meal. The banana pancakes were a highlight of every morning, while the tuna sandwitch is among the best I've ever had (believe the hype!) Dinner was truly a feast.. a wonderful array of raw and cooked vegetables, choices of various seafood and meats, as well as wonderful sides - especially the beans and rice. The top-notch quality of the food was far and away the biggest surpise of our time at BdC.

For those who like active vacations and are in love with nature - REAL nature - BdC should be at the top of everyone's list. First-timers to BdC may want to think twice, however, about staying in a garden cabina.
