“It was great!”

This was the best part of our two week vacation to Costa Rica. We stayed three nights and would highly recommend it. For our young family, three nights was plenty. Keep in mind, this is not an “easy” resort. You are camping…in a rain forest…very far from your home. However, the staff did a great job. The food is really good, something for everyone and plenty of it. Evening “happy hour” was great. We had some wine and visited with others from all parts of the world. We did not do a lot of hiking or exploring because we have young children (5 & 6 years old), we pretty much stayed at the camp or just did short explorations down the beach—which was perfect for us. Even without the extra effort, we seemed to see as much wildlife as everyone else. Showers and toilets are surprisingly nice—given the location. Flying to Carate is definitely the way to go. Do not drive, it is too much trouble and a time waster.

The pounding surf is incredible, especially at night when it is completely dark. It is great for boogie boarding (which they have available), but not for leisurely swimming or wading (too dangerous). Definitely great for shell hunting though!

For us there was some stress because of all the unknowns (i.e., scorpions, pumas, cane toads), especially at night, but it is just such an adventure it can’t be missed!

“Corcovado: The highlight of my trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2007

Corcovado Lodge is a group of permanent, wood framed tents in a gorgeous, secluded and wild location. The tents are lovely and comfortable. No electricity in them. Clean, community bathrooms with cold water showers. (It was so hot that the showers were actually refreshing!) Gorgeous natural surroundings, amazing wildlife, friendly people, no TV, no internet, no phones or cell service, limited electricity.........my idea of heaven. If its not yours, don't go here. I would recommend Corcovado for teens and older.

Although swimming is possible, I wouldn't go here if your goal is to lay on the beach. Delicious fresh meals served community style. The staff was absolutely wonderful. The guided trips (I consider having a guide mandatory) were fantastic. The all day hike in the national park was flat and not particularly strenuous. Swimming in the Madrigal River was extremely refreshing. The early morning birdwatching hike in the Carate River bed was amazing & included butterflies and howler monkeys as well. We hiked up behind the tent camp more than once. We went up to the 80 foot high platform to view life in the canopy. Although it was a lot of fun and was a different perspective on the rainforest, we didn't see any animals/birds that we hadn't seen without going up into the canopy. I'm told that what you see up there is highly variable.

Be sure to bring a flashlight, charge your camera battery while the electricity is on, watch for the hummingbirds in the hibiscus surrounding the tents, spend some time in the hammocks on the platform in the rainforest halfway up behind the tent camp, and get to know the staff. Get up early for the best animal sightings, wear moisture wicking clothing and good breathable hiking boots. Forget about blow dryers or caring how you look.

Oh yes, although its possible to get here by land, I would highly recommend flying. The views of the coastline and mountains are worth the flight. The road to get here is a long, bumpy, dusty dirt road. Whether you arrive by land or air, be prepared for a 30 minute walk down the beach to the tent camp. A horse drawn cart carries your luggage.

“Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp, Where' the fauna?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2007

I recently spent three nights at the CLTC with my wife and two kids. This place is billed as offering a unique chance to view wildlife given its remote location and proximity to Corcovado National Park. My family found that this wasn't the case however, and the animals we encountered weren't as numerous as we found at Manuel Antonio near Quepos. The facilities of the lodge are quite rustic and expensive and the only reason for enduring them is the supposed opportunity to view flora and fauna that wouldn't be available elsewhere. In addition, at these prices I don't think that it is unreasonable to have the cost of guided hikes included in the price. By the time I paid for a full day hike into the National Park and being winched up to the top of the forest canopy I felt that I had been overcharged. I would advise anyone considering this lodge to take their family to Quepos for several days, book a four star hotel and take a full day trip to Manuel Antonio. Your comfort level will be much higher and you'll get better value for your money.

The camp is located just steps off the water on a beautiful beach. We fell asleep and woke up in the morning with the sound of surf. The tents are big, with regular beds, not cots. There are maybe 5 or 6 tents that are very close to the water with excellent views. We were in one of these. There are other tents that are a little further away with obstructed line of sight to the water. We were happy with our location. We would have been less happy in the others, but they would have been OK. The matresses were comfortable. A top sheet was all that was provided and needed for warmth while we were there.

The food was good and plentiful for the breakfast buffet (eggs or pancakes plus fruit, cereal, milk and coffee).

Lunch was sandwiches (1 ham and cheese, 1 tuna fish), banana and bottled water on our Rainforest Tour and the Snorkeling trip to Cano island.

Dinners were tasty but seemed a little small to me (and I'm not a huge eater). Dinner was not buffet style, each course (salad, entree and dessert) was served plated, so the portions were set by whoever was back in the kitchen. I would have liked the opportunity to serve myself in the portions I wanted.

The restroom facilities are on the rustic side. There is no hot water. You wash-up and shower in spring water. The spring water was tolerable in the middle of a sunny, hot afternoon. It's definitely on the chilly side before breakfast or late evening.

Toilets were clean.

A number of people came down with diarrhea while we were there, including my own mild case. This may be a result of drinking the unfiltered spring water (the only free water available) which we were told was safe. I'd advise drinking only bottled water (or bring your own filter pump and use the spring water) and avoid the ice teas and fruit drinks served at dinner and provided in large pitchers and --I think--made with spring water, not bottled water.

The camp staff were great--always very friendly and helpful. The guides for the Corcovado Forest Tour and Cano Snorkeling Tour were excellent.

“Corcovado Tent Camp”

We stayed at the Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp for five nights. They took wonderful care of us, which was good because this place is really in the middle of nowhere with no stores, restaurants, etc. nearby. I highly recommend this spot for adventurous types who don't mind the heat. It was very hot every day, although you can always shower or jump in the ocean to cool off. The trails behind the camp lead up into mature rain forest which is awesome. Corcovado National Park is just a 15 minute walk down the beach, and the trail through the park is along the ocean the whole time (unless you do more than a day hike). Lots of people saw pumas while we were there but we didn't see one. We did see a "tyra," an anteater, tapir tracks, coatis, a boa, and a billion birds, butterflies, lizards, toads, and crabs. Our guide said the rainy season is better for seeing wildlife, and the most incredible and endangered wildlife can only be seen by taking an overnight hike into the heart of the national park by the lagoon. But the diversity is still incredible year-round and hiking was an adventure every day. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed eating meals with people from all over the world. The meals were "all-you-can-eat" with a variety of food available so don't worry about going hungry. The food was fabulous but we recommend bringing some Immodium just in case something new in the food/water doesn't quite agree with you. Also bring lots of sunscreen, sleeveless shirts, and a flashlight and washcloth. Towels, shampoo, and soap are provided. Snorkeling is not available, there are constant big waves in the ocean here. I was surprised that we had no mosquitos although we did have a few little ticks that were easily removed. We took a little flight from Quepos which was easy and fun. We felt sorry for the people who drove their silly rental cars for hours and hours to get there. We saved a lot of money and sanity by not renting a car during our 2-week trip to Costa Rica! Anyway, we highly recommend the tent camp, it was awesome!
