I stayed at Casa Bambu twice in 2011. A week at the end of January and 18 days in December, so I guess I like the place. It has three great attributes - location, character and people. I travel extensively world-wide for my job. Every continent except Antartica. I have stayed nowhere else where I could see and hear so much nature pass by my porch. All four Costa Rican monkeys, toucans, macaws, green parrots, hummingbirds, lizards, dolphins to name but a few. The house is different. I've seen houses constructed elsewhere in the world but Casa Bambu and its three sister properties are different. A combination of bamboo, Costa Rican hardwood and green technology. No glass, just shutters raised by winch and pulley. Solar panel powered electricity that we found to be ample. A great shower, a head, twin basins, gas cooker, chest-style refrigerator and a cooler to contain an iceblock for drinks. It will dwindle away over three to four days. There is some fruit in the garden. The beds are comfortable and have bug screens. Bugs are most prevalent when it is wet. Now the people. Lyn and Kirk are the owners. They are likely to be on site for half of the year. They are extremely pleasant and helpful people. You are their guests. William is the manager. He also provides a tour service par excellence. During our first trip he took us to Corcavado National Park. On the way there and during the 22 km hike he spotted all manner of wild life, including anteaters and a sloth. On the second trip, Barbara and I were accompanied by Mary Kay, Barbara's 89-year old mother. He took us on a drive to find wild life for Mary Kay. Again, he found a sloth. Leda and Marle support him. They clean, garden, make beds and do the laundry. They will also cook for you. Their meals are inventive and delicious. They also provide baby and "old lady" sitting services. On the one day that we went into Puerto Jimenez, they kept MK company and thoroughly entertained without speaking each other's language. They joined us for MK's birthday party and we all had a good time. Everyone helped with the party, Barbara from Puerto Jimenz despatched ice cream by taxi and Anna, the barmaid at Martina's, baked the birthday cake. So many truly pleasant and hepful people. Josh ran a great boat trip for us and made sure that MK was safe. As we were heading back to port he had a call that there was a large pod of pan-tropical spotted dolphins. We headed back and watched them frolic for haf an hour. I think Barbara will write a separate report. Suffice it to say that I am looking forward to making another trip. Pura Vida.
