We stayed here five nights in this very out-of-the way eco lodge located near the Panamanian border on the Pacific Coast. We drove from San Jose in order to see the countryside and were glad we did, but most clients fly into the tiny airstrip at Tiskita or the larger airport in Golfito, then take a water taxi. The place is set in primary and secondary jungle in which the owners have planted an astonishing variety of tropical fruits from all over the world. Hence the wildlife is abundant and well-nourished. Our first day, a troop of squirrel monkeys jumped around in the large tree next to our cabina, throwing fruit on the ground to the coatimundis. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We watched them quietly for well over an hour. They were not the least bit initimidated by our quiet presence. This was exactly why we came here.
Now the accomodations are very simple, kind of like summer camp, but with private showers and verandas. The triplex is less private and geared to a group traveling together. Three meals a deal are provided and heavily oriented around fruits and vegetables. Portions are smaller than what many Americans feel is adequate when eating at home in a restaurant. But the portions were adequate, and we did not go hungry. If you use a lot of calories being highly physical here (which you can certainly do), bring snack foods to tide you over between meals. Food is trucked/flown in from faraway as it is so remote, so meals got a little skimpier right before the next delivery. Seating is family style, although your food is individually plated, except at breakfast. It was fun getting to know the international crew that travels here and takes nature very seriously. There were few Americans when we were there, many Brits, French Canadians, French, Swiss, Irish.
The owners are lovely, friendly, and charming. They eat with guests at all meals, are available to answer all your questions about flora and fauna and they are impressively knowledgable. They lead the tours into the jungle and the fruit farm. They are glad to arrange other activities for you as well, such as horseback riding up into the primary jungle.
