“Open and Airy room, but needed new mattresses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Upon arriving in Montezuma, my sister and I went to our booked hotel, El Sano Banano. When we were escorted to our room, we discovered that our room was very small, dark and the one window didn't open. As I have claustrophobia that wasn't going to work. The hotel manager was very kind and gave us a full refund. She then took us to Hotel Jardin just up the street. The rate was $25 higher per night ($95 per night). The room was small, but open, light and had windows on 3 sides. It also had a cute front patio with a hammock to relax in and two chairs and a table to sit outside. The bathroom was incredibly small (large people would hardly fit) but the shower and tile work was nice. The jacuzzi was cold water (?) so unusable. The room had no t.v. but it did have a refrigerator. The mattresses were the worst and the pillows a close second. We kept checking the bedding thinking there might be bedbugs but never found any. But, they were yucky and need to be upgraded for that price of room. The website states that coffee and continental breakfast will be served but it amounted to a cup of coffee and a small package of a boxed type cookie. Although it was good enough, I feel like it was over-priced. We were tired though and just didn't want to insult the very kind people at El Sano Banano who helped us out in finding another room for two nights.

“Nice place, great location, Lovely ocean view, MAD MONKEYS!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This is a very nice and well located place, I really like the way they built it!! It has a nice view from the rooms on the of the property!! But all the rooms are OK, AC, Hot water, etc. Everything you need for some days at this gorgeous colorful town.

The only bad/scary part of my experience was <the mad monkeys>. I was with a friend in the top of the property trying to find a better spot to take some pictures of the landscape, suddenly a big troop of white-faced Capuchin monkeys came from the forest behind us... I think they were just passing by, but they felt threaten by me and my friend making some noise and taking pictures. One of the monkeys came very close to me and almost attacked me, showing his teeth and yelling!!! We successfully avoided them and everything was OK at the end. But still, it was so scary. I never expected it to happen.
I fully recommend this place, just be careful with the mad-crazy monkeys!

Room Tip: Try to get the rooms on the top of the property! Gorgeous view! Rooms around the pool are NOT quite...

“Great location set in beautiful grounds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed here over New Year's and absolutely loved it. Location is great to access everything in Montezuma, but not noisy in the poolside rooms. We had one on the upper level with a hammock, sharing the balcony with the room next door. Having the pool and aircon were great options and the rooms were clean. The grounds were beautifully kept and staff were friendly and helpful. We thought this was the best option in Montezuma and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Second level poolside

“January 2012”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

This is a lovely hotel with exquisite grounds that reflect the natural beauty of Costa Rica. The staff are pleasant and accommodating. The casitas are charming with a bohemian and tropical feel. The vistas from the casitas are outstanding and the pool side rooms enjoy the beautiful landscapes. Yes, it is a steep climb to one of the casitas but ...what a great work out! The casitas have fans only, no ac. We loved the hammocks and wish there were more, also more comfortable sitting for outside the casistas. I would suggest to the management that they upgrade the mattresses and sheets, as they were dingy, ill-fitting and gave the feel of a less desirous hotel. The town is very alive at night, so bring your earplugs or join in the wonderful madness!

“The leaning house in Montezuma....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We where four adults, renting one of the houses. The one with two bedsrooms. The location is very good, but Montezuma is such a small place, so any location would be good. We wanted to stay in the house because it had kitchen. The kitchen was nice, clean, quite new. But, the whole house is crooked. And not just a bit. You get seasick just crossing the floor. I never experienced that before. The one bedroom down stairs is build on a later stange, and is dragging the house down the hill. We where a big scared actually. One day that house will fall apart.

They have also build a terrace, with greate view. Except that big three blocking everything. The whole hotel had no comfortable chairs! None! We only got two chairs on the terrace, which was weird because we are four persons. We asked for two more chairs. The owner thought that was very strange, nobody had ever asked for that before. (?) After asking two times, they got us two plastic chairs, which where sooo much more comfortable then the wooden chairs they have. Another thing is that the owner was not sure if the terrace could hold the weight of four adults!!! WARNING!

The house was clean, hot shower, be aware that the housekeepers likes cocolate.

We had a good time, and fed alot of the animals outside the house! One skunk and 3 different racoons came by every night.

The pool is clean, of course the sunbeds are not comfortable. And there is not sun many hours during the day around the pool.

They have free coffee, at the reception, but, remember to bring your own cup from your room!

In the end: To pricy!! And scary with the house beeing so crooked. Maybe the private rooms as better, I hope so. There is also no A/C in the houses.. seriously, how much can that coast to get...
