“Great location. Decent hotel”

We had to switch hotels because the one we were at first was booked the rest of the week so we walked down a little ways to this one and it was a great deal so we decided to stay the rest of the week here.
We were in the cabana's not the hotel and there seemed to be a pretty distinct separation in how the staff was at one from the other. The staff at the cabanas were great. Very helpful and let us use the phone to call another hotel and helped out with any questions we had, the staff at the hotel part wanted to charge for everything and they weren't too personable. Very different then the rest of the Costa Rican's we met during the week. They charged for the computer (even if it was just a minute) , the phone for local hotel calls, for an extra towel if you needed one for your hair, charge for a beach towel if you needed one. The room was clean but the shower never got any hot water and the doors wouldn't close right. Also the water didn't drain well and there was a pool by your feet.
The location is great. Just a path to the beach and there is a great backpackers hotel next door with the coldest and cheapest beer in town. The pool is nice, could be a bit cooler, but overall a decent hotel. It could be a great hotel with the right owner but until then, just decent. They did have an excellent breakfast though with just about everything you would want whether it be traditional Costa Rican or American.

“Fabulous location. Excellent service”

Maybe I'm biased because the place we stayed at before this was disgusting but these cabinas were lovely. The room was clean and spacious, we even had a small kitchenette area in our room. Fresh towels each day and air conditioning if you need it.

The reception staff were friendly and informative. The breakfast that's included is taken at their sister hotel just across the road and this was great.

The location is excellent as it's just a couple of minutes walk from the public beach and other bars and restaurants and about five minutes walk to the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park.

There is free wi-fi at the hotel. A small but clean pool to relax by. Definitely recommend this as a place to stay for people on a medium budget.

“Excellent location and ambience - but needs some renovations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2010

We stayed at Cabinas Espadilla for (2) nights while on our three week Costa Rica vacation.
The location is excellent.....we didn't use our car at all. (as close as you can get to the beach and the park)
The outside ambience of the cabins and pool area is really nice. There is a huge covered porch that spans the cabins, so even if it's pouring outside, you can sit in very comfortable wicker furniture with puffy pillows.
Inside the cabins, there is a safe, small refrigerator, efficient air conditioning and 2 queen sized beds.
There is no hair dryer and the towels and linens are low grade.,,,,however, the pillows and matresses are quite comfortable.

A couple of maintenance items
1) The crank louvered glass windows were difficult to operate and a couple of the glass panes fell out of their mounts
2) The Shower stall and bathroom are very mold stained and dirty - see my pictures - Also the sliding glass door was very difficult to slide (was off its track)

Other than the state of the bathroom and problems with the windows, everything else worked and the room and grounds were clean.

There is also a small fridge in the room.

What we liked
- The ambience of the outside
- The pool and grounds
- The bed comfort and pillows

To Improve
- Staff engagement / friendliness
- Bathroom and shower maintenance and cleanliness
- Window maintenance

The price we paid (on the edge of low season) was quite high for what we got - but I assume the excellent location allows them to charge that price.

“A great find near beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2010

We were indeed so fortunate to use the Cabinas Espadilla as our home base for our three-day visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. There are so many positive things to say about our stay here that I hardly know where to begin! First of all, the staff is helpful in every way, and the rooms are comfortable and very clean as are the grounds, the swimming pool, etc. Secondly, the Cabinas are in a perfect location if your goal is to visit the park and its lovely beaches. We parked our car free for three days and just walked everywhere we wanted to go. This was perfect for us. There were more than enough restaurants close by as well as a delicious bakery and a small grocery store. Best of all, of course, was our close access to the park entrance. From the Cabinas, we were close to both the entrance and the exit of the park. We would visit the park in the morning, one day with a wonderful guide recommended by Yafet and the other day, on our own. Then we returned to our room to change into our bathing suits and returned to the park to swim. Just wonderful!

The only reason that I have listed the sleep quality as "good" rather than "excellent" is that howler monkeys (as well as squirrel monkeys and capuchins) abound in this area
and put up quite a howl during the predawn hours! We loved it and even taped the sounds just because it was so exciting to hear. But those looking for a long night's rest might want to be sure to bring earplugs and/or keep the air conditioner on. We did neither because we just loved being so close to nature. This place was great, and we hope to return one day

“You're Paying for the Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2010

I didn't LOVE this place. The rooms were okay, the service was okay, and the pool was decent. Overall, the place just looks a little old and worn out. While the price wasn't high, it was more than some of the other places we stayed that were much nicer. This is probably because of the location. The Cabinas are easy (less than 1/4 a mile) walking distance to the entrance of Manuel Antonio Park and Manuel Antonio Beach. If you don't mind staying a little further away and taking a cab or longer walk to the beach/park, I'd stay somewhere nicer but further that will cost the same. On our trip, we stayed at the cabinas for 2 nights and then stayed at a hotel about 5-10 minutes away (by cab) because it was so much nicer. That said, it was worth it to stay here on the days we wanted to be at the beach and the park. Oh, and we did see one monkey on the street in front of our hotel and several more when we went in to the park.
