“A home away from home and a tropical paradise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012 via mobile

We just had our third visit to Vela Bar and can't wait go back. The whole place is charming. We love the Casita and truly feel it is our home away from home. There is nothing fancy about Vela Bar but that said everything is just right. Rosa, Luis and their staff are simply wonderful. The gardener Francisco greets all the guest every morning with ? Como amanece? The gardens are beautiful and The ambiance could not be duplicated. The hotel was built about thirty years ago over a several year period so it is not new or grand. It fits so comfortably into the jungle which is such a pleasure. There is a very comfortable sitting area near the reception area to mingle with other guests and have quick chats with the staff. The alfresco dining room is very attractive especially in the evening when Oscar the waiter decorates the tables with his fanciful folded napkins. As everyone has said the location is great. The beach at Manuel Antonio is lovely. The water is warm and the sunsets are fantastic. We will be back next year.

“Worst hotel I stayed at in Costa Rica”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I would not stay here if I could do it over again. The staff was not very friendly and not nearly as helpful as other places I stayed in Costa Rica. They advertised free breakfast, but this turned out to just be toast. The rooms were dark and not very clean. And the owner's dog kept biting my suitcase the entire time I was checking in and out.

Decent value, great location, but there are surely better places to stay in MA. On the plus side, I did hear howler monkeys outside my window one morning which was pretty awesome!

“No, no, no”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I found this hotel from Lonely Planet. I'm wondering why LP book listed this one and highlighted the location. There are quite a few other hotels as close as this one or closer than it to the park.
The room they gave me was a nightmare. It's hard to believe any hotel can sell such a room to the guest. It's in the restaurant and next to the kitchen. You can hear all the conversations and music outside. The disguising thing is it's next to the public bathroom. You can hear water flush next door all the time. The room itself is more like a storage, the rusty fan, the small bathroom and shower, rough wall etc. I had to close the window and drop the curtain all the time to keep some privacy.
It was horrible. It really damped the mood for vacation.

“Nice Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

I just stayed at Hotel Vela Bar for 3 nights, got room 6. 5 minute walk to the beach, clean room, hot water, nicely maintained. Pretty grounds. My room had a full or queen? plus a single and a full size refrigerator, hammock outside my door. The room was at the end of a row on the second floor and cleaned nicely each day. The breakfast was not included and was 3800 colones (I hear it is included in off season) but there was a place next door Costa Linda Backpackers Paradise, more of a hostel/restaurant/bar, that had a killer breakfast for 1800 colones and really fun bar. WIFI was strong but only works in the restaurant reception area and they created a purpose made place to comfortably use the laptop or the computer they have there. I will definately stay there again. I don't why it is named "Bar" as that could turn some people off although there is a nice bar in the restaurant area but it is not a bar/hangout place at all at least while I was there other than some guests. The only noise I could hear at night was the howler monkeys and they had a friendly little puppy.Room had a/c and ceiling fan. Only needed fan. Room had safe for $3 extra, didn't use it and left my wedding band out the entire time and it was not stolen.

“Great location and cool spot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

After leaving another place during an approaching tropical storm 2yrs ago (just now reviewing, sigh), decided to try this place that we had dinner at few times. No it's not the fanciest nor probably the cleanest but it was clean enough and super cute. Opted for the bungalow that was like the Swiss Family Robinson; open livingroom and sitting room w/ small loo and kitchen, back door w/ sitting area,
upstairs open bedroom w/ loo and another back door to patio. Lying on the bed listening to the howler monkeys in the forest literally right behind you was amazing. We went at the end of tourist season, so I think most of Costa Rica was just sick of dealing w/ it. While they weren't warm and fuzzy, they did soften by the time we left. Don't go expecting alot and just go w/ it.
I wouldn't take my mom there, she'd need nicer standards.
It's placed at the back entrance to the park, but we didn't realize it at first and just took the little boat the guys ask $1 for to get you to across the stream near the beach. Front desk isn't going to be a tour director, but if you smile a little they'll be more helpful. And don't try to haggle, this isn't Thailand and they don't react well to that. We didn't, but witnessed it.

Room Tip: Separate bungalows are awesome.
