“Awful experience!!!”

This was a terrible, terrible experience. My biggest concern regarding the hotel is that it is potentially unsafe. There are only screens on the windows and the window to our bedroom was next to the balcony, so someone could easily climb in through the screen. There were no safe places to stash our belongings (no safe and the room itself was practically wide-open). Our room was gross. The bedding was thin and the bed lumpy. Thank goodness there was no overhead light or else who knows what else we would have discovered. The toilet did not flush (even when toilet paper was not put in it). Parking our car was very dangerous. They do not have a parking lot and you are forced to park out the side of a narrow road. We checked in and then left in less than an hour to stay elsewhere.

“Spend the extra for a nicer hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2007

We decided to book a jungle room after surveying their website. Their website portrayed a colorful, fun, and whimsical hotel with a very reasonable price. The location was ideal as well.

Upon arrival, it looked as we anticipated, cute, colorful, and whimsical. However, our experienced tells another story. On our first night, we ended up in a front room facing the loud street instead of the jungle room we orginally booked. We raised the issue with indifferent staff the next day. Fortunately, they had an opening for a jungle room for several days; however, we had to move back to the front room on our last day bringing the total moves to 3.

The staff is indifferent and communication tends to be poor. The pool we swam had improper chlorine levels but we were told after we swam in it. Supposedly, breakfast with coffee was included but each morning the staff told us the vendor couldn't make it for some unknown reason. At that point, we didn't care since they didn't care. Several times, the power and water was shutoff but our hotel never pre-notified us. We found out from other hotels who had flyers posted in their cafes we ate at.

Bottom line, you get (or don't get) what you pay for at this hotel. The location is great and look of the hotel is fun but spend the extra $50 for a better hotel.

“A-OKAY hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2006

The hotel was decent. It was nothing special but for some all we need is a decent bed and clean bathroom. Our room had an air conditioner and tv. The service was not warm and inviting but it was not rude either.

Breakfast was nothing special either. You basically get unlimited breakfast which consists of cereal, toast, fruits, coffee and tea.

Overall, it was an OK hotel. You basically get what you pay for. Manuel Antonio is a pricey town compared to other parts of CR.

  • Liked — Monkeys behind the hotel.
  • Disliked — Funky smell in the bathroom.
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out Marlin's restaurant in Manuel Antonio and try their $35 unlimited lobster.

“OK room, but don't believe the website”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2006

I read the reviews before I went and also read their website. Here are the unadulterated facts of our stay:
(1) The hotel is not expensive but is in an area of pricy places to stay. It is a low cost alternative in a relatively convenient location.
(2) There are strips of sidewalk but no continuous sidewalk to the beach. The road is very busy and traffic is not the most courteous to pedestrians. Walking to the beach is possible but is not enjoyable due to the traffic. The road is steeply descending, to the beach, which is just a fact of geography.
(3) I saw no evidence of air conditioning. This was not an issue since I didn't expect it, but I believe the website indicates you get AC. You probably won't.
(4) The room is spacious, albeit spartan. You get a bed, overhead light with celing fan, some shelves, and a roomy bathroom with CostaRican hot water in the shower. For those of you who have not seen this, it is a hot water heater built into the shower head. Some wiring is exposed but overall, it is safer than it looks. We had a balcony with seating that looked out over the jungle in the back. That was really nice. This was their midrange room, a suite I think.
(5) Monkeys, sloths, and a variety of birds do live behind the hotel, in the jungle. You will probably see them; we did. That was nice.
(6) Breakfast was fine, CR style. It included the usual trio of fresh fruit (pineapple, melon, papaya), toast with spreads, coffee, and their banana bread. That was excellent.
(7) Service was OK. Not great, not awful, just OK.
(8) The restaurant/bar across the street, El Avion, is interesting and the food was OK. The bar had live music when we were there until late at night, and you will hear that music clearly from the hotel. Frankly, I never thought I'd hear stairway to heaven on the bongoes...
(9) I can't say anything about the pool since I didn't visit it. It would almost have to be in full shade, given the layout of the place.
(10) Parking is beside the main road. Do not leave anything in your car.

“find another hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2006

The place itself is nothing special, simple rooms, etc. The "special" thing is the service and treatment of the guests. Promised ameneties are not provided and if questions are asked the guest is invited to "find another hotel". BTW the Manuel Antonio park is way overrated. It is extremely commercialized and full of people, locals and turists alike. Anyway, if you have to go there look for something better than this hotel.
