This was a huge jump for me. I've never traveled alone, yet to a location in the middle (more or less) of Central America. Would it be safe? Would I feel awkward? "Take the plunge" is what I often repeated to myself and it was, hands down, the best decision of my life.
I didn't seek out surfing, nor Costa Rica. I searched far-and-wide for alternatives for solo-travelers, but kept coming across the same problem - absolutely outrageous single-fees. I couldn't believe it - I mean, I felt like I was literally being punished for being single. Is it my fault I wasn't involved with anyone? Is it my fault that as my friends and I grew, the frequency of our group trips not just slowed down, but came to a complete halt.
So here I was nearing the end of my fiscal with a surplus of "use-it or lose-it" PTO days to burn. I came across VG, and Costa Rica and surfing (or attempting) were on my bucket list. It was such a relief to come across a place that not only accepted, but openly welcomed and encouraged solo visitors. From the moment you arrive, they are their (VG reps) to escourt you on an hour or so commute (it goes fast) along an absolutely beautiful stretch to the site (I hesitate to use "resort" as it's nothing near - not a bad thing). We stopped mid-way along a long bridge to witness up-close and personal live crocodile swamps - A FIRST, just awesome.
As mentioned, upon arrival you see that it's nothing like anything you've probably never experienced. No high-end resort amenities, but a secluded "natural" cabin experience. Please note: cabins are arranged on a fairly steep mountain - hike up may be tough for some with leg ailments or comparative issues, so would request one of the lower cabins if so. Regardless, Alvo and team won't mind driving you up (although step, it's not a terribly long walk).
Alvaro and team are top-dawg in CR ranked surfers - so you're not going to find a better assembled team. Cabins are limited - 6 total, so it's very likely you will have a one-on-one instructor for the duration of your surf sessions - I've heard horror stories of instructors at other camps overseeing up to 8 students at a time, limiting your runs. Alvaro is extremely proactive, so this will never happen under his camp.
Accommodations are cozy and nature-esque, Wendy, Alvero and team are ALWAYS available, and the food...simply amazing - the freshest ingredients, some picked right off the mango trees surround the location. Security is not needed, but there is an armed guard that watches the grounds in the evening - just in case.
The only thing I would of changed looking back would be to extend my trip a couple more days. VG offers 10 days stays as well - 7 days just wasn't enough.
