“Needs work”

We stayed at Punta Leona for two days in Jan 2012 as part of a tour to Cosa Rica. The staff was friendly and helpful but the facility needed a lot of work.
The grounds were poorly maintained and the room looked like it had not been remodled since the place was built some forty years ago.
Upon checking out I was asked about my stay and complained about the shower.
The staff laughed. I guess they know about conditions.

Room Tip: Fine another place

“Amazing Resort, Amazing Wildlife”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

My husband and I just returned from a 7 night stay at Punta Leona and we absolutely loved every minute of our stay! Everyone is extremely friendly at the resort and were very helpful answering our questions! We had no problems checking in and it took all of 5 minutes.

The most amazing part of this hotel is the wildlife and the landscape, we have never seen anything more beautiful. We loved this resort because it didn't feel like you were in a city setting but rather it felt like you were right in the forest. If you like wildlife and experiencing nature this is the place to visit. Everyday we saw something new. At breakfast there were white faced monkeys and coatis. Throughout the resort there are many beautiful birds, including Scarlet Macaws, Toucans, Mutmots, Parrots and we even saw a Pygmy Owl! Iguanas and Geckos can be found everywhere not to mention the plant life.

The hotel offers free guided walks; a night walk, a bird walk and a butterfly garden walk. My husband and I signed up for the night walk and the bird walk which were both fantastic. Alex, who does the guided walks spoke perfect English and he knows his stuff!
We also did a couple excursions outside of the hotel, a crocodile and bird tour as well as the Canopy Zip line tour, both of which were amazing! There was so much to do on the resort and outside of the resort that we wished were had booked for 2 weeks rather than 1.

There are actually 3 places that you can eat; the main restaurant which has a buffet for breakfast, lunch and supper. The food was always good. There is also a "snack bar" which offers a wide range of food like burgers, calamari, pizza (really good!) etc. We had the all inclusive package so we never paid anything for our food or alcohol. The waiters at all restaurants are amazing and very friendly.

There is a shuttle that you can take every 30 minutes that will take you to Playa Blanca and we never had an issue catching the shuttle! There was always plenty of room. We went to Playa Blanca almost every day because it was so beautiful!

The rooms were a little outdated but they were clean. However, we didn't come to Costa Rica to watch TV and stay in our room.....

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and my husband and I plan to come back again next year. We never had any of the issues that other guests had!

“Dreadful experience”

Strongly discourage any stay at this resort. Waited 4 hours in a hot, uncomfortable, and smog-filled lobby (on-going car traffic jam adjacent to open-air lobby) when -- surprize -- all the rooms were ready for check-in at the same time! Travel back and forth from the hotel rooms to the beach/swimming pool area (nearly one mile, one way) was supposed to be provided by electric cart -- but, good luck finding one. Except for once, we always had to walk the distance. There is no sidewalk along side the road so we were constantly moving out of the way of cars and trucks. Our room was awful -- mold growing on ceilings, unkempt surroundings. The first night we stayed, a woman banged on our door at about 10 pm speaking Spanish (looking for the beach?!) and the front desk told us she was probably just confused. (!?!) Food at the restaurant was only adequate and at $20 per person per meal, I expect more than adequate. The buffet was the only restaurant option as the restaurant that took reservations was closed and, it is a long and expensive cab fare into the nearest town. There are two active construction sites on the grounds so the air, plants and trees are covered with dust. The "behind the desk" folks tried to charge me $35 for local calls when a sign in the room said local calls are free. I returned to my room (yes, I walked each way in the heat, dust and traffic) to retrieve the sign so that I could be refunded my $35 dollars. Even with the room sign in hand, the front desk staff argued with me! The majority of the activity at this resort rests with the owners/renters of condominiums and houses on the property. These folks zip around in their cars or private vehicles leaving the rest of us to walk in their fumes. Because this resort is located in a national park, it is also loaded with "day trippers" who lug their ice chests, beach umbrellas, etc, etc, etc and basically fill up the area to overload. The security in the resort was a real cause for concern for me and my husband. There was a 10 minute wait to pass the entrance security guard gate; there was a security guard stationed at the first intersection (about 2 miles from the entrance gate); another security guard at the intersection to the main lobby; another security guard station at the entrance to one of the beaches. Guess they are expecting the worst? Uncomfortable feeling. Again, strongly discourage any stay at this resort.

It is nice if you just want to hang out. There are no excursions you can take and not much to do. We had to rent a car and go into Jaco and Quentaras for things to do.

“Metropark feel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

As we entered and did our initial walk through of the park, I could not help but feel that I was in a city metropark with its pools, tennis courts, and soccer fields. Not to say those are a bad thing, but it just gave a feel of not being very private. The whole compound was in a sense very strange but I would not say bad.

Take the far ride and walk to Playa Blanca, much better than the closer beach. Nice white sand, and warm water.
