Booked through Expedia, which said there was “only one room left” when I got there, I was one of two people staying in the 10 room hotel - which was more like a nice motel.
Other Expedia (& Hotels.com) listed Untruths:
Room amenities:
“in room safe (accommodates laptop)” no way your laptop would fit in it.
“Coffee/ tea maker” There was none.
“Premium Bedding” - The bedspread in my room had a cigarette burn hole and stains on it - they did change it out when I brought it to their attention.
The bathroom towels were grey and dingy - and shredded!
Simple little things, that I shouldn’t have had to mention, which made me feel like I was being a demanding American.
Under property amenties:
“Currency Exchange” - I tried to change money – desk clerk said, he couldn’t do it.
“Microwave in the lobby”, and “television in the Lobby” -- there is no lobby!
“Air conditioned public areas” - there is no interior public area except the restaurant, which was closed most of the time.
“Free/ Secure parking” - Only three spots in front, off the dirt road that leads to the place -- on the other side of the dirt road, the public beach. More than three guests, you’re parking off site.
(At night, there was a security guard, who seemed diligent.)
Tried to book through their website which listed better rates than Expedia. Got no response to several emails I sent both in English and Spanish, even though I did not receive any “undeliverable mail responses” - - and copies of my emails to them made it to my mailbox. When I checked in I was told “breakfast is not complimentary, because I booked through Expedia and not directly with the hotel.” The breakfast menu items in the restaurant were about $8-10 (4000 colones) add coffee and tax and service – like $10-15 -- come on! Every other hotel I stayed at in Costa Rica Free full on breakfast – eggs, fresh fruit , coffee, gallo de pinto -- the whole deal. They ended up giving me a Tico breakfast after the first day: A half cup of gallo de pinto and two eggs, tortillas and coffee, though the restaurant was closed one day so no breakie that day, (and was closed Every day at 3pm)
People were nice, manager was a sweet woman who tried to make things better, but the various hotel websites regarding this place are misleading. I honestly felt I had been taken advantage of, kind of made my stay there a bit of a bummer. Would have been fine if I hadn’t paid way too much. Least nicest hotel I stayed at in Costa Rica – second most expensive! (stayed in four different hotels - the three others were great) I paid $140/ night for this room (for 5 nights!). While I was there they had a sign out for $75 night! Ouch! I really felt as though I had been ripped off, especially since I had tried to book through the hotel directly. Who doesn’t respond to emails from guests?!
Stay there if you surf, it’s on the beach, waves are good, and boards are free to guests and the beach in front is the least rocky in Jaco - which is a nasty beach, but don’t pay more than $75 a night.
