“Nice hotel, good location, nice staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

I just returned to Jaco, after a five day trip.
I'll start by the positive:
- Hotel nine is very clean
- AC works great
- They clean and change your linens everyday
- The beach is not even ten feet away.
- You can walk to the town from the beach (its less than a 10 min walk)
- They lend you free (and great) surfboards
- The pool is clean
- No bugs!!!
- It felt safe

The negative
- The town... Didn't like it at all
- The pool isn't lit at night, so no swimming after it gets dark
- It'd be nice to have a microwave and electric kettle in the room
- The restaurant isn't awesome (could be) and food access is, well, you have to go to town.
- If you're travelling solo, go somewhere else.

All around, hotel nine is a great little hotel, especially if you want to surf. I didn't like the town, so noone bugged me and everyone was pretty nice. There wasn't much to see or do except drink and party.
Also, book directly through hotel (call them), it's cheaper and breakfast is included.

“Overpriced, misrepresented on travel booking sites”

Booked through Expedia, which said there was “only one room left” when I got there, I was one of two people staying in the 10 room hotel - which was more like a nice motel.
Other Expedia (& Hotels.com) listed Untruths:
Room amenities:
“in room safe (accommodates laptop)” no way your laptop would fit in it.
“Coffee/ tea maker” There was none.
“Premium Bedding” - The bedspread in my room had a cigarette burn hole and stains on it - they did change it out when I brought it to their attention.
The bathroom towels were grey and dingy - and shredded!
Simple little things, that I shouldn’t have had to mention, which made me feel like I was being a demanding American.
Under property amenties:
“Currency Exchange” - I tried to change money – desk clerk said, he couldn’t do it.
“Microwave in the lobby”, and “television in the Lobby” -- there is no lobby!
“Air conditioned public areas” - there is no interior public area except the restaurant, which was closed most of the time.
“Free/ Secure parking” - Only three spots in front, off the dirt road that leads to the place -- on the other side of the dirt road, the public beach. More than three guests, you’re parking off site.
(At night, there was a security guard, who seemed diligent.)

Tried to book through their website which listed better rates than Expedia. Got no response to several emails I sent both in English and Spanish, even though I did not receive any “undeliverable mail responses” - - and copies of my emails to them made it to my mailbox. When I checked in I was told “breakfast is not complimentary, because I booked through Expedia and not directly with the hotel.” The breakfast menu items in the restaurant were about $8-10 (4000 colones) add coffee and tax and service – like $10-15 -- come on! Every other hotel I stayed at in Costa Rica Free full on breakfast – eggs, fresh fruit , coffee, gallo de pinto -- the whole deal. They ended up giving me a Tico breakfast after the first day: A half cup of gallo de pinto and two eggs, tortillas and coffee, though the restaurant was closed one day so no breakie that day, (and was closed Every day at 3pm)

People were nice, manager was a sweet woman who tried to make things better, but the various hotel websites regarding this place are misleading. I honestly felt I had been taken advantage of, kind of made my stay there a bit of a bummer. Would have been fine if I hadn’t paid way too much. Least nicest hotel I stayed at in Costa Rica – second most expensive! (stayed in four different hotels - the three others were great) I paid $140/ night for this room (for 5 nights!). While I was there they had a sign out for $75 night! Ouch! I really felt as though I had been ripped off, especially since I had tried to book through the hotel directly. Who doesn’t respond to emails from guests?!

Stay there if you surf, it’s on the beach, waves are good, and boards are free to guests and the beach in front is the least rocky in Jaco - which is a nasty beach, but don’t pay more than $75 a night.

“Great location on the beach, but not what you're lead to believe it is!”

Don't get me wrong, being able to walk just 25 feet to the beach from you room is amazing. We don't need much, and our room was perfect! The pool is small, but nice, and there is a hot tub. However, there are not quite the amout of beach activities that they claimed there would be. No volleyball courts, no horseback riding, etc. They also claimed to have an on site chef, which they did not. The owner lives on site and was super friendly and very helpful! All in all it was a great place, just dont excpect too much. Also, the receptionist do not speak english (I understand that it is not their primary language) but brush up on things like asking for towels, or to have your room cleaned, or how far to certain destinations! The beach at this hotel is the best in town though, that is for sure!

Room Tip: our room number 2 was the best :)

“Perfect location, great staff...Best place to stay in Jaco”

This is the perfect hotel for pretty much anyone. My friend and I are both women in our twenties and were a bit hesitant to stay in Jaco after hearing how wild it was. Hotel Nine was the perfect place to stay! It was far enough away from the party scene but close enough that you could walk (during the day) to town to get food etc. Cabs cost under $5s to get into town at night time and the nightlife was awesome. The hotel staff was very accomodating, the rooms are pretty basic but were clean and fresh and the restaurant views were breathtaking. We ate breakfast at the hotel everyday because it was soooo goood. You have a crystal clear view of the ocean and you really feel like youre on vacation here. There is a surf school right across from it on the beach. They also have lawn chairs exclusively for hotel guests which really come in handy. We felt very safe at this hotel, the staff, namely Fabio at the front desk didnt hesitate to ensure we got to and from the hotel safely and really helped us out for all that we needed (as we did not speak one word of spanish). We will without a doubt go back there next time we are in Jaco!

“Great place to relax, party or use as an adventure launching point.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2011

The owners, Dennis & Steve are great guys. I have been to this place on 5 different trips to CR. I always look forward to returning. The last trip, tourism was a little slow and the town wasn't quite as lively. The surf was awesome and so was the weather. I can't wait to go back again and some more spearfishing. Heh Steve and Dennis, you guys rock !
