“Magic Moon rocks!”

We stayed Aug 10-13th at the Magic Moon House! The property was very nice, we utilized both levels ( 2 bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs). The layout of the house was great, a nice open kitchen, the outdoor space on the 2nd level is wonderful, my brother and cousins used the hammocks to relax a lot and you can see the ocean right in front of you. The rooms are very spacious and we appreciated the way the house was functional for us. The house grounds are really nice, it's like you're in your own oasis. We opened up the house doors and windows as much as possible....we even noticed a horse farm behind one of the bedroom windows that had live cattle, kind of cool for all the cows to do an about face and stare at us. The house does not have have AC, it has fans throughout the house but, honestly we were on the beach so, we felt the breeze...no need for AC. I will tell you that you will need bug spray and ant spray....the caribbean side is the natural side of costa rica so, you're living the simple life. We basically had our own private beach and we had a rental jeep so, we drove down to punta uva and manzanillo. Johnnys and Mangos are the best bars in Puerto Viejo. For food, we liked Mare Nostrum, Lydia's Place and Koki Beach. A lot of people recommended Tamares, do not order the chicken sandwich or burgers, definitely not a fan. Kind of dumb of us to order that anyway...fish with rice and beans is the way to go, costa rica does not really have a specialized cuisine. We went to the supermarket and bought food since the house came with a fridge, oven/stove and microwave. The rocky road leading to Magic Moon and Banana Azul is a bit rough, we were definitely isolated from the center town of puerto viejo but, it's only a 5 mins drive or 10 mins walk on the beach. If I come back to Puerto Veijo, you better believe I'm staying at Magic Moon again....we were really not impressed with any of the other hotels we saw in town and on the beach, most of them are rundown or just plain jane. Also, if you want to do ziplining, jungle tours, white water rafting, snorkeling or scuba diving, the Banana Azul hotel, where we had to pick up the house key, is a few doors down and offers Gecko Trail Adventures, great times! The best in costa rica hands down. Aaron and Pablo our guides were great. Ashton who arranged everything is very cool. Best time to go to Costa Rica is nov - feb and with that said, it was 80 degrees in august! We would have loved to have more sun but, we ovbiously understood we were in their winter season....there were still a lot of people at the bars though, especially after midnight....late crowds. Go to Mangos first or another bar on the small main road then venture off to Johnnys on the water, you're sure to have a good time. Also, for those who are interested, follow the smell of ganj, it's openly smoked outside by the locals, especially at the bars....the cops don't really hound folks, when locals see cops coming they just put their joints behind their backs until the cops roll past....so seamless. Our time at Magic Moon was very laidback and relaxing, we went to the Pacific coast afterwards, Jaco and Manuel Antonio and we preferred the Caribbean side the best even though they were not as advanced as the Pacific side. I believe the Caribbean side got electricity in 1986'. We didn't get a chance to see Samara, Mal Pais or Montezuma on the west pacific coast, must go by ferry from puntareanas which is 30mins from Jaco ....but, maybe next time. But, with that said, If I were you, I would check out both coasts...Jaco is packed in January (probably a good home base) which from a tourist perspective might work out better but, the Caribbean vibe had us wanting to go back to Puerto Viejo even when we were in Jaco. Puerto Viejo is about a 4 hour drive...if you don't get lost from San Jose. Jaco is about an hour half from San Jose so, plan accordingly. The rental car from Natcar.com helped us a lot to explore the country. You can take a bus shuttle to Puerto Veijo instead and then come back to San Jose and take a bus to the pacific coast or rent a car or vice versa, whatever works for you. We wouldn't have seen as much without a car. Stay at least 3-5 days in Puerto Viejo and 3-4 days in Jaco to truly experience the fun. If you don't have a car....it won't be the same experience to get up and go see and do whatever you want. Stay at Magic Moon in Puerto Veijo and any Daystar property in Jaco. I can go on and on...have fun! FYI, this is not the Ibiza or Miami party scene so, keep that in mind.

Room Tip: Book a house or cabana not a hotel in Puerto Viejo!

“All I had hoped for and more!”

Magic Moon house is a gem in Southern Costa Rica. I was traveling alone and stayed at the house for a week. Magic Moon house is managed by Hotel Banana Azul; which is only a short walk away.
The house has two bedrooms upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. There is only exterior stairs for access from the ground level bedroom to the rest of the house. But there is a bathroom on the ground level as well as the upper level. The gardens that surround the house are meticulously cared for. There is a very sweet young woman that comes in every other day to clean. It was amazing how clean the house was given all the sand and the ocean breezes.
The house is completely outfitted with a full kitchen. I cooked one dinner there, it was too easy to walk to Banana Azul for dinner and a little socializing. They have a lunch menu with sandwiches, quesadillas etc. Three choices for dinner (normally) with salad and dessert. Majority of the dinners were pretty good. Highly recommend the guacamole and fresh chips for a great snack if you don't want a full lunch

The Banana Azul staff go above and beyond making sure your stay there is comfortable. I was going to be arriving late and in corresponding with David, had wondered about getting a bite to eat after I got in. He preordered dinner for me so I could warm it up at the house after I got settled.

The beach was beautiful and the water was warm.

A couple of things to note about the house:
There was little to no warm water for a shower. It was not an issue for me, but it is worth noting. I don't know if there was a setting somewhere that needed to get turned on (like on a water heater).
It gets dark early and there is very little light between Banana Azul and the house. It isn't desolate as there is another hotel on the same road, but it is something to be aware of.

“A beach house find, terrific value, lovely garden, tiny but serves a purpose...cosy”

Self Catering not a hotel. Everywhere was booked up when we arrived, we wanted to stay in Banana Azul but they too were booked up, but they let us know about this place. We had no option but were thrilled with the find, very cheap and a perfect base. Beach is at end of the garden across dirt road, not too spectacular but very handy and not crowded- most time we were only ones there. Banana azul is two minutes away. Taxi or hire bikes to get around. We loved it, kept costs down by filling fridge and we could then splurge on VIP accomodation elsewhere in C.R i.e Peace Lodge.
House is very very small, but has porch so extended living area and cool as there is only a fan in the accomodation. Sea breeze is lovely we stayed in Sept 08 and weather great. Would definately recommend and was nicer than some hotels we stayed in...but that is another story!!

Only downside crime was a concern, nothing happened to us but conscious to ensure gate was always locked, and we kept everything in the safe. Best Taxi driver Sandro, if at all possible try to find him and let him know Ireland says hi!!!!!!

We loved Magic Moon house! Checked in at Banana Azul and were taken to the house by the caretaker, Susanna. We were shown the ins and outs of the place, then left to relax. The house had three bedrooms (2 up, 1 down), an awesome deck overlooking the gorgeous property, kitchen, 2 bathrooms......Beach across the street. Gate to keep out any uninvited people. The house has no AC, but the fans in the bedroom kept it cool, and the deck always had a welcoming breeze. Towels were plentiful in the bathrooms, and the maid who cleaned one time while we were there was great and super nice. I highly recommend staying here, SOOO much better than staying at a hotel.

“We love Magic Moon Bungalow!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 March 2010

The bungalow was beautiful! We stayed there for 5 days. It's not fancy, it's not five star, but that's not what we were after. Everything was a little rickety and old, but we didn't have any problems at all. We didn't really use the kitchen, we just stored beer, water, and snacks in the fridge. The bed was comfortable. We slept with the windows open and used the mosquito net. I was fairly afraid of bugs at night since the windows didn't have any screens, but we didn't have many problems. I did see one tick & one roach...but hey, you're in Costa Rica, so I didn't think that was too bad.
The grounds were absolutely beautiful! We spent a lot of time hanging out in the hammock. The beach is just feet away and Banana Azul is a very short walk. We ate many meals at Banana Azul and the food was fantastic! In fact, we didn't have a bad meal the whole time we were in Puerto Viejo.
The first morning that we woke up, there was the cutest little puppy at our doorstep! She belonged to the neighbors, but she came to see us almost everyday and I would have taken her home if I could have. We named her NuNu, and give her a scratch from us if you happen to see her there!
All in all, we would definitely recommend the bungalow for young, adventure loving couples like us. It's not fancy but if you just need a place to crash, then this is the place for you. I loved that it gave us more privacy than Banana Azul, yet we had the benefit of using all the amenities there. We love Magic Moon!
