“Nature, in all the wrong places”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Ok, call me a city girl, but even in the jungle I might expect that my room (when $100/nite and referred to as an upscale bungalow) might have fewer than 20 bugs flying around within its "walls" (read: screens) at any given moment. I like the idea of Tierra and might have better dealt with the deafening animal sounds and creepy-crawlies a bit better if the whole thing had been set in an actual rainforest or even an area with some semblance of authenticity. BUT, on the side of a busy yet narrow road in a dirty backpacker town... no thanks. I'm going with average because of the absolutely wonderful staff, great breakfasts, and proximity to the beach. Just know what to expect.

“A great taste of Costa Rican life”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

I read through a few of the negative reviews for Tierra de Suenos, and I can understand why they were disappointed or upset when they got there. However, this is in Costa Rica, so it isn't meant to be a luxury vacation (at least in my opinion).

I loved staying here and would definitely be open to doing it again if the opportunity arose.
Yes, the beds were wet from the humidity, but that is to be expected when you are staying in a place with rainforest during the wet season.
Please note: Your clothes WILL be damp if you leave them exposed to the air, but that is something you have to face all over the Caribbean coast of CR.
The breakfast was excellent every morning, and the owners were very friendly. I loved their dogs, too, as I am a dog person.
One thing that I wasn't prepared for, but did find amusing was the howler monkeys making noise early in the morning. The rooster, however, was a different story. I was ready to kill that thing.

Because there is no air conditioner, the roof and windows have to have gaps to allow the air to escape, this allows a few creatures (bugs and lizards) to wander into the houses. I will admit, that was slightly annoying to deal with, but understandable and expected.

Pros:
- Very friendly owners and staff.
- Delicious breakfast.
- Close enough to the town for a bike ride.
- Very close to a nice (basically private during the low season) beach.
- True Costa Rican experience.

Cons:
- Damp beds and clothes.
- Bugs may enter your room.
- Mosquito nets do have a few holes, but nothing TOO big. I still didn't have any bugs land on me at night.
- Rooster crows early in the morning.

“Highlight of our trip on the Caribbean Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

We had a fantastic time at Tierra De Suenos. This b & b is set in the jungle south of Puerto Viejo in a Playa Chiquita. The cabin was very cute with hammocks on the deck and bug covers on the four post beds. Since it is in the jungle you will hear all kind of animals around you which is exactly what we were looking for.

It was still the slow season so we were the only ones there at the time of our visit. The staff were busy preparing for the busy season which was just around the corner.

The host Emile was great and she helped us out a lot with bookings and recommendations. There is a very friendly kitty cat that would often escort us to our cabin.

In terms of Puerto Viejo, we were not fans of the area at all. The town is dirty and it is very expensive in terms of food and drink. We went to one restaurant where they charged us $6 dollars for 2 Ginger Ales. Also, we always felt on guard b/c safety is a bit of an issue in the area. We preferred the area south of town, Playa Chiquita and Playa Cocles were quieter and cleaner.

Despite of our opinion of the area we were super happy with our stay at Tierra and would definitely recommend it to others. It was good value and the breakfasts were very nice. If you are looking for a cool jungle experience it is worth checking this place out.

“Great family vacation spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

This B&B is a little gem in the jungle. Our family visited Tierra de Suenos in August for a well-deserved vacation and had a wonderfully relaxing time. Maureen and Jake (our hosts) and the entire staff at the hotel treated us like family. The trips arranged by them included visits to the Jaguar Rescue Center, Carribeans cocoa farm, deep sea fishing, and a number of great beaches. The cabinas were clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts varied daily and were expertly prepared.
Puerto Viejo is not to be confused with Cancun or some of the resort towns on the Pacific coast. There are no large resort hotels and sprawling timeshares. But there are a number of great restaurants, nightspots, and lots to see and do. And the beaches are beautiful.
Special thanks to our hosts for making this an unforgettable vacation for our family.

“Great place for a jungle adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

Tierra de Suenos is a beautiful jungle home. Breakfasts are delicious, rainstorms on the tin roof are magical, and its location on a little road to nowhere means that you can escape the pace of hectic life. The area's mix of Caribbean and Latin influences isn't for everyone, and the highlights of the area are adventure activities, tasty and varied fusion cuisine and local haunts, and the colorful nature of the locals and local way of life.

Room Tip: Casa Colibri is especially nice.
