“Azania Bungalows - great stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Stayed Jan 4th to the 8th, 2012. Beautiful grounds, good breakfasts, better dinners. Some other posts I read were that staff was less than friendly. I am barely able to communicate in Spanish, but found that showing an interest in learning about the area and the people brought out a very warm and helpful aspect in everyone, from housekeeping (Doris) to the front desk (Katherine).

In spite of having two solid days of steady rain and sea conditions that were poor, we had a great time relaxing in the covered areas, playing cards and visiting. Staff was willing to prepare food and drinks if wanted, but no pressure to have us buy or move, Lots of interesting details, flora and fauna on the grounds. The last day the rains lifted, animals came out, there were two sloths that came down from their rainshelters to let folks discretely take photos.

Yes, the beach is better for EXPERIENCED surfers, so do not choose this area if you have folks who need milder water sports.

Lastly, the showers - Lorenzetti "heated" shower heads are very common in CR. They may not meet expectations for North Americans as they tend to not get really hot (in the tropics, who needs HOT). If you can not get the temp you want, check with a staff person on operation, many places in suffer poor electrical controls so the circut breaker may need to be reset.

“Great stay overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We had a wonderful stay at Azania -- loved the bungalow, lush grounds (with sloths in the trees!), accessible nice beach, INCREDIBLE complimentary breakfasts (fresh fruit, custom-made eggs), and friendly staff. We loved being able to get around by bike, but we agree with a previous reviewer about the traffic making it stressful and definitely not an option at night (we took taxis at night). Our main gripe was noisy neighbors. Though our bungalow was set back off the road and away from the restaurant/front desk, it was at the edge of the property. Just over the hedge that marks the Azania property line, the neighbors were quite noisy -- dogs, roosters, and obnoxious fire crackers could be heard at least a few times throughout the day. This is not Azania's fault, of course, but we felt we should warn future visitors.

“A nice place to stay but be warned.”

Azania Bungalows is a nice place to stay. The staff at the front desk and restaurant staff are very nice. The landscaping on the hotel grounds is amazing. We felt like we were in the middle of the rainforest. Unfortunately, the bungalows are a bit close and since the walls are mostly screens, you hear everything your neighbor says. This wasn't too much of a big deal as the grounds were quiet at night. Cocles beach across the street is gorgeous. The one big issue is the road to Puerto Viejo. We didn't have a car so we either had to walk or ride bikes. It's about a 30 minute walk to town, much quicker by bike. Because of the width of the road and the speed of the cars you have to be a little cautious during the day while walking or biking. However at night the road becomes down right treacherous. So much so we would've taken a taxi. Unfortunately we didn't see any. Bring a flashlight and bright clothing if you don't plan on renting a car.

“"like staying at your in-laws'"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

what a disappointment... first the good.. nice grounds and clean bungalows. BUT, we felt like intruders all week. The main complaint for us is the service. The owner lurks around the property, never says hello and gives you a sideways glance as you sit in his lobby as if to say"what.. you're STILL here?". You start to feel like a child, afraid of doing anything wrong.. they accused us of stealing one of their moldy towels, which they charged us for, then found it when they made us come with them to inspect the bungalow when we checked out,, in case we stole anything I guess....nothing on the menu is ever available and they aren't nice about letting you know that. It was really stressful staying here. We really felt like an imposition. PLus the town is really expensive actually. The beaches are horrible,, huge waves and you can't swim and the tide comes up to the trees, so there is really no where to sit.

Room Tip: get away from the parking lot

“Perfect Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights during our honeymoon in September 2010. It is a small property with private bungalows hidden in beautiful landscaping. The staff at the hotel was wonderful! Our goal was to find a vacation spot where we could relax and enjoy the surroundings and not have to do the planning. We would let the front desk know what we wanted to do and they would arrange everything for us. We could even pay for the excursions and be picked up right at the bungalows. It is close enough to town that if you wanted to walk you can, or the hotel will call a taxi. The bungalow itself was clean and cozy. The beds do have insect netting which we didn't find necessary as the whole bungalow was screened in. There is also a mini fridge in the room so you can go to the local store to purchase cold drinks instead of depending on restaurants all the time. One day our hot water wasn't working. I told the front desk before heading to the beach (which is across the street) and it was fixed when we returned an hour later. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and I miss the coffee! We rarely saw other guests (except for breakfast time) so it was almost like we had the place to ourselves. My only critique is that the pool was not super clean, although clean enough for us to use. My husband loved it here so much that I am having a hard time convincing him to travel to other countries for our next vacation!
