“Blah.... Stay closer to either Cohuita, Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

This was tough to give a "poor". The poor rating is primarily value driven. Had this Hotel been $30 cheaper a night I would have gone with an "average". But, it was $90 a night and simply not even close to being worth that.

That said, the staff was very nice, rooms were very basic, bed was rock hard; but AC worked well. Dinner was decent but expensive, breakfast was free; but so bad we passed and had some in Cohuita.

We have family in Costa Rica and spend a lot of time here. I recommend a place on the outskirts, but walking or biking distance to Puerto Viejo if you are in this area.

Room Tip: Our room has two single beds, you may want to ask for a single queen or larger bed.

“simple but good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2009

Spent 3 nights here in mid May 2009. Good value too.
It was low season in Costa Rica, and we had the place practically to ourselves. Used it as a base to explore the caribbean coast.
Staff were pleasant, knew their job, breakfast and dinner was ample and good. The cabins were located deep in the complex surrounded by nature. If you need to escape then this is it. Walking around even in the grounds of the hotel was nice. But it is isolated, you need transport to go anywhere. Although we used public transport it was manageable. Hotel seems to have had an overhaul and is pretty, but it is really for letting the world behind you for a few days. I can imagine a lot of people might not think this place suits them, but do your research first, ask questions - its a rural getaway at best.

“Jan. 07-Horrible Experience....NO HOT WATER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2007

This was an experience of a lifetime. My family and I stayed at this hotel and it was not a pleasant experience. We had food at the restaraunt and service was horrible. The first waiter came to service us and then he disappeared. When we saw him again he was pointing to our table telling the other waitress to bring beverages over to us. She bypassed our table several times to wait on other tables and never attempt edto assist us. The food was not Costa Rican. The native people would not dare to eat there.

When we got to our room to take a shower the hot water did not work. When we turned on the water, it was brown. There were bugs flying in the bathroom and worms crawling on the tile floor.

That was the same with the air condition. When we turned it on sounded like a Harley Davidson rumbling that needed a tune up.

I would never again recommend this Hotel to anyone and after talking with a local native friend in the area she said this hotel was horid and not to stay there. It is known for this reputation.

“If you like to vacation around others, don't go here.”

Ghost town. Out in the middle of nowhere. Beach is across the street and unsuitable for swimming. No hot water until the 3rd day. No colones exchange. We recommend going to Cahuita or Puerto Viejo instead. More people, restaurants and things to do. If you prefer less people this would be a good choice though. The room was clean and the restaurant had good food. The price was also reasonable. The whole caribe coast seemed to be more economical than the rest of the country. Avoid the one day tour to Tortuguero. It was arranged through the hotel and was totally expensive and not worth the price.

“The best place in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2005

We went in May during low season and rented a car. Drove all around Costa Rica starting from San Jose to Tamarindo to the Flamingo in then up to the Arenal Mountains and to Limon and back to Manuel Antonio before departing. Relatively small country, but be warned, no real roads to map if driving. We stayed in many hotel/vacation spots. We ended up at the Colon Caribe outside of Limon after going to Cahuita from Limon. Rented a room in Cahuita but then checked out before night fall and started driving towards Limon to find any "more secure" place and came upon Colon Caribe. Best vacation stay ever. Was only planning a few days but ended up there 1 and 1/2 weeks.

Not to say bad things about Cahuita, but most rooms on main street didn't feel secure leaving the type of money we had. Cahuita is a small surf town with gravel roads and with a few people selling weed/cocaine at night. But nice people, no on will bother you unless you want them to, and fantastic place for jetski/boating/snorkeling adventiures. Great for surfers and those young and those looking for adventure. Don't get me wrong. lots of family with kids there during day time. But have to say the Park there is great, saw active sloths. Just remember in Cahuita, bring colons. No one makes change for $100 U.S, and prefers not to take travellers checks or credit cards due to government rules trying to drive local merchants out of business.

Driving towards Colon Caribe, you will see a pinkish wall running along the road. The front is partally fenced with a guard at the gate and a river runs around. It was $50/person U.S. all inclusive with any form of alcohol/drinks and food three times a day with snacks scattered throughout the day. Food was selected from a good variety, fresh, and tasty. Better than most high scale places in U.S. We were in the bungalows and the room had ample space. We never went hungry for food. Most days we were too full from one meal and snacks to even eat any more. Only problem was with the all inclusive drinks, was that most nights we passed out early each day. Breakfast is fantastic in Costa Rica. On the facility there is a boat for tours around the waters with a great guide that looks for animals. The property had lots of crabs, lizards, etc. to view on premise along with a pool and pooltable. The staff is excellent and they provide a lot of privacy and will cater to you. But we were one of a few guests staying during the week at that time. Before we left after extending our stay to 1 and 1/2 weeks there was going to be a big party. Colon Caribe is a hidden treasure and caters to the people/company in Costa Rica along with tourists The best value ever. Just be sure to tip the staff and they will treat you as royalty.
Limon is on the Carribean side. A must visit for anyone going to Costa Rica that loves beaches. It is a better place with calmer waters verses the Pacific side. Also better for the pocket book in value. Pacific side, harder to sit in waters at beach without wave knocking you over. But all of Costa Rica is beautiful and extremely enjoyable and safe. Different areas have there special surprises. Costa Rica has less crime than U.S, with number one cause of death for Cosat Ricans being premature death dut to auto-pedestrian accidents. Every native Costa Rican walks. So be careful making those turns if driving. PURA VIDA!

Be glad to answer any questions that I can regarding in Costa Rica.
