Just returned from another holiday in Cahuita. We have been travelling here for the last 6 years for a month each time and love it. Yes it can rain a lot, yes the beach (black) can be covered in debris but the mix of people, the surfing, the food and the unique experience more than make up for it.
This year stayed at the Cabinas Iguana and yes there was a real Iguana in the hedge by the wooden 2 bed house we rented. In the garden viewed from the luxury of the hammock I also saw a sloth with baby, hummingbirds, guisuti (something like that - little pig things) lizards, bats, numerous birds - amazing. Iguana has a small but very nice pool apparently an iguana has been known to jump in and there was a toad whilst we were there! Owners are Martin who is Swiss origin and Sofia who is Costa Rican they have 2 charming children and help from Martha and Ricardo.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay outside of the main town then stay here or at Cabinasa Mambo/Jardin Tropicale run by Arleen who will take you dancing if you're lucky!
