My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Alby Lodge. There are only 4 cabins each with beds covered with mosquito netting. The fan in our cabin sufficiently cooled the cabin down at night. Our cabin was very clean and the use of the "rancho" outdoor kitchen and shared large refrigerator made meals very easy on the budget. It was a very short walk to the nearest supermercado. We could also check our e-mail while we were at the outdoor kitchen area. The location is very private even though it is only a short walk to the National Park and Beach. To get to a safe swimming area - plan to walk 20-30 minutes down a well groomed trail. Bring your lunch and insect repellent with you as you walk the path and watch for monkeys and sloths. Howler monkeys were often right in the trees next to our cabin and yes they howl at the crack of dawn. Cahuita itself has several restaurants and a few shops. We visited Cahuita in 1999 and it honestly looks about the same or even a little more tired than when we were last there. The highway leading to Cahuita was in much better shape than in 1999 and is being improved on toward Puerto Viejo. We drove there one day to watch the surfers and to swim at Punta Uva. The flora and fauna around the cabins was beautiful and I felt very safe walking back to our cabin from town, in the dark - which reminds me a flashlight is a must. Plan to pay cash at the Alby Lodge.
