“Immerse yourself in nature!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We read about this in our travel guide and were inquisitive an we had good reason to be. This place is really very special indeed and is well suited to the hard-core nature lovers an the enthusiasts (we are only enthusiasts). It seemed a lot of the clientel were using this as a base to study. The lodge is very eco-orientated. It also offers a wealth of information and the staff are all virtually experts on Costa Ricas biodiversity. The river running through is beautiful. The walks and surroundings are amazingly preserved and cherished. The resturant was closing at 8pm as most of the people staying here were up 4-5am to get out and absorb the surroundings! We were told by the barman Ivan who was incredibly interesting and knowledgeable that around 60% of new discoveries and information about rainforests comes from the area and you can see why. The tours offered by the hotel are all very reasonably piced and very good. We did the early morning bird-watch (which we saw 3 types of different Toucan!) and the horseback riding. For the horseback riding we were collected by three local lads aged 14, 15 & 17 and it was probably one of the best expeiences in Costa Rica to watch these enterprising lads on their horses; we went into the farmlands then through rivers where they got off and were swinging from the vines and dropping into the deep! All lovely to see and experience - the riding and seeing how the local children. Selva Verde is beautiful, to seems it is more run due to the love of nature as opposed to a business although by saying this i do not for one second mean that it is not professionaly run because it most certainly is! Wonderful to see such respect for our environment. I very highly recommed this very special place.

Room Tip: We actually though the standard rooms were probably better than the bungalows for location and atmos...

“nature nature and more nature!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This place is unique. It is not just the frogs, iguana's, howler monkeys, humming birds, great flowers and tall trees on the terrain. You can also feel the intense respect for nature, both from the guests and the staff of the selva verde lodge. If you want to see and learn a lot, this is the place. Nice excursions possible too! If you want heavy nightlife, you have to go somewhere else.
The rooms and the 2 restaurants are simple, but the food is good to very good and fairly priced. We recommend this place.

Room Tip: We stayed in the casona, which is a fairly large chalet house. Lot's of space for our family of...

This is a bird watchers' dream. Very, very comfortable quarters tastefully presented. Tucked into its natural surroundings. Typical and plentiful Costa Rican food. Quiet. Bird feeders. Day tours available.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms that are riverside.

“Selva Verde Lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here 3 nights, mainly to birdwatch...I was in good company as most other guests were walking around with their binos. Toucans, parrots, crazy looking tree frogs, three kinds of Monkeys. Bot the birding package and had a guided walk each morning Guides knew the birds by sound and sight. Also lodge provided meals which were a delicious and healthy buffet..Loved the food. No TV, most rooms have ceiling fans with no A/C but wifi worked great. Rooms very clean. Nice bar with outside seating along the river. Would recommend for those who are looking for a real ECO experience. In my opinion, not really a kids place. Brush up on your Spanish idioms.. Many staff speak Spanish but you can get by and in my opinion this was a big part of the charm..

“The Jungle Experience for Everybody!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

I've been there in the end of December 2011 and was my first contact with Costa Rica after a night in S.José. I was a little concerned about the Tripadvisor review of this Lodge, but I can honestly say that if you are not able to appeciate this Jungle Lodge, You'd better stay home and watch the Jungle on TV. The founder, Mrs. Giovanna Holbrook, is so nice a lady and so proudly involved in conservation that only meet her and listen to her stories is worth the trip!

If you like to see birds. frogs and other animals and plants of the mountain forest, this is the place to be.

The Lodge has two kind of accommodations, rooms by the river and the more expensive and
"private" bungalow on the other side of the road and up the hill; we had the new bungalow (twins) that were nice and confortable with a very, very nice veranda.

The drawback of the bungalow is that you have to walk up and down to get to the restaurant(and after a hiking day...), but in the morning and in the evening you can have the Jungle for yourself!

The staff is so kind and the food was good.
