“Wonderful hotel, friendly staff just the perfect welcome to Costa Rica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We stayed there last night and loved it, it was the perfect welcome to Costa Rica. The staff over there were very very helpful, they upgraded us to an executive junior suite. The room was huge and with all the amenities. If this is not enough, on arrival they give you a cookie which is surely the best I ever tasted! The breakfast, which comes at USD 22 per person, was not included in the price but it was worth every penny.

“Very nice if you want to stay outside the capital”

We stayed here a total of 3 nights in January 2012: 1 night at the start of our 16 day stay in Costa Rica, and 2 nights at the end. The hotel is located half-way between the airport and San Jose, so there's traffic, but not as much as closer to the capital. We brought our own GPS from home with a Costa Rica chip for our rental car, and the hotel would've been easy to find with the GPS if we'd known what we were told later...that it takes 1/2 hour for a GPS from the U.S. to adjust (even though it appeared to be working!) It took us 1 hr. to get the 1.8 km from the Avis Rental Car lot to the hotel, between the crazy GPS and a traffic accident on a road the GPS kept taking us to!. The hotel is large, attractive, quiet (well away from the highway), very clean and comfortable. The warm chocolate chip cookie for each of us on arrival was delicious and most welcome. Within the same room category, our second room had a balcony overlooking the pool; our first room did not. The swimming pool area and jacuzzi are nice. Sometimes reservations include the buffet breakfast, which is pretty good and includes made-to-order eggs, and sometimes it doesn't, so make sure to take note of that. There is a free, gated, guarded parking lot. I read in Trip Advisor that dinner here wasn't worthwhile, so we had a choice of restaurants and a small, but upscale, market 1 block away. We liked the 2 restaurants we tried: at Gourmet Station Restaurant, the meal was Americanized, but the fish was wonderful. Foccacia's had wonderful fish and seafood pasta. When I told the doorman, Julio, that I was looking for a guanabana (Costa Rican fruit) to buy (we'd had the smoothies, which were wonderful), he told me the nearby markets didn't have it, and offered to pick one up for me on his way home that night and bring it to me the next day. They cut it up for us at the buffet breakfast. Now that's service! We'd stay here again.

Room Tip: If you don't want to walk far, ask for a room nearer the lobby; these don't have balconies...

“Good, but could have been great!”

I liked the feel of the hotel, as it didn't look like a business hotel at all, and was more similar to a resort. It is located very close to the airport, which is great, and has a nice mall close by, with lots of decent looking restaurants. There's also a 'fresh market' as soon as you step out of the hotel, towards the right.

As I am a vegetarian, the restaurant manager was very sweet and offered to make something for me for dinner (the buffet is mostly non-veg). On the second night, I didn't even have to ask them, and the manager himself came up and told me he would cook up something good, and it was delicious.

What I didn't like was my room - It was located close to the lobby area, and I could not get any sleep on most nights (owing mostly due to the sounds coming from people walking outside, or laughing in the lobby area). I did ask for a room change, but was told that the only other rooms available were on the opposite side, which were facing the highway and would be more noisy. During my entire stay, I managed to sleep only once for more than a few hours at a stretch. It was certainly the deal breaker for me. The room itself was quite nice though, with high speed wifi connectivity (at an extra charge of USD 10 per night), with the regular amenities provided. Other than that, there is something about a fresh bottle of shampoo or bar of soap in your room everyday that makes traveling more refreshing but sadly over here, they didn't change the toiletries until they were completely used (shampoo in my case).

It's a good hotel, but I just wanted some sleep :(

Room Tip: Don't take a room on the ground floor/close to the reception, and as you enter the hotel, the ro...

“Pleasant”

After spending three nights at the Royal Dutch hotel downtown San Jose, this was paradise. Attractive Courtyard, reasonably priced (I think I paid $149 per night), nice swimming pool, hot tub and sauna, and the food was good. Our room was clean, new, and good amenities. The staff was friendly and helpful. The courtyard where the pool is located is spacious, beautiful tropical trees and plants, and the nearby bar and restaurant is spacious, good food, and pleasant staff. A continental breakfast comes with the room along with about as many of their incredible chocolate chip cookies you want.

The hotel is about 10 minutes from the airport. Also, it is within walking distance (maybe 4 blocks) from a nice mall and cinema. To get to the mall, you walk out the front door, walk 1/4 block to your left (you will see a small and nicely kept park in front of the hotel), turn right and walk a 1/4 block to the intersection and turn left. Walk two blocks where you will see a large souvenir shop to your left. Look to your right and you will see a pedestrian bridge that takes you over the highway and on the other side is the mall.

Happy travel

Room Tip: This is a Hilton property and they give Hilton and airline points. They have a safe box in the room...
