We stayed at the Peace Lodge at La Paz from February 4-6, 2012. This was the first of a 4 hotel, weeklong tour of Costa Rica to celebrate our 10-year anniversary.
I feel this is one of the most overlooked hotels in the country. The price per-night is steep in my opinion, but the expected quality meets the price so if it is in your price range I highly recommend the stay.
Arrival: We were greeted at the steps by the front desk staff. The initial appearance of the hotel is that it is situated in a nature preserve of sorts (which it is), and that it is very well kept. We arrived at about 4:30 from a flight that landed at about 2:30. There were no other visitors in the immediate area and everything felt very secluded in a good way. We were brought to our room (which are all named after butterflies, so you need to remember the name of yours, it is written on the key for ease of memory, but I don’t know how that works if you loose the key I guess they could just reset a new card, so let them know ASAP). There are a LOT of stairs to the rooms, so be prepared. We were greeted in the room by a free bottle of wine for our anniversary, which was a nice touch; they were the only hotel on the trip to do such a thing (even though we stayed at another of their resorts later and they didn’t even comment).
Room: The rooms are BEAUTIFUL! Wonderful views, hot tub and hammock on the patio, waterfall shower and waterfall in the bathroom as well. The room in general was very clean and comfortable with a comfortable bed with drapes and mosquito netting/canopy.
Restaurant: The food was very good but a bit high in price. Given the secluded nature of the hotel it would be very difficult to go to another location for a meal without spending the balance of the price difference (and more most likely) on a ride. The servers were excellent. They remembered your names and were a friendly face to see every day. We had room service breakfast both mornings to enjoy the view.
Grounds: Very beautiful grounds. Lots of flowers, butterfly garden, frog house, wild cats, monkeys, great bird house, native type house, and that doesn’t even mention the 5 beautiful waterfalls that are on the grounds. The garden is worth a visit even if you didn’t stay here. My only negative is that with all of the wild life present in housing and enclosures, I saw very little wildlife outside of it. No birds to speak of other than hummingbirds. I was a bit let down with that, but it could have just been the days we were there, and the view more than made up for it. We had plenty of day trips to see animals.
OVERALL: A bit expensive with a surprising lack of natural wildlife given the nature preserve setting, but the view, flowers, and enclosed animals more than made up for this. I would highly recommend this hotel as a stop at the beginning or end of the trip as an alternative to a San Jose hotel. You won’t regret the decision.
