While on an Overseas Adventure Travel tour of Costa Rica, we stayed at La Condesa for three separate nights. We enjoyed the view, the remote location (you do not want to stay downtown in San Jose), the wonderful restaurant and bar, and the very lush plants and nice decor. While the rooms are spacious, they do need to be refreshed (torn draperies, chippped paint, no mattress pads). The bathroom was clean and a nice size. Free Wifi was an added bonus. We enjoyed the pool and the Jacuzzi, but did not try the steam room. The bar was a good gathering place for Super Bowl (in Spanish, of course!), with reasonable drink prices. If we ever return to San Jose, we would consider staying at La Condesa.

This was probably one of the worst "5" star hotels I have ever stayed in - they need to lose at least 3 stars. Now I know the true definition of the phrase "thread bare". The sheets were so old that you could see right through them. The staff could not be more uninterested in making our stay a nice one. We had kids and were staying in the villas - they would not shuttle us and suggested we walk the "Path" - there is no path to speak of. There is no air conditioning. I can't imagine whats its like there in the Costa Rican summer months, The Pool was ice cold as were the two "hot" tubs.
To wrap this up, this was by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and would never recomend to anyone - one would be better off staying at a hostel

We stayed at La Condesa for two nights, one at the beginning of a tour and one at the end. The hotel is in a pleasant hillside location above San Jose. In fact, each of the times we were there, the weather was much cooler (with wind and rain) than it was down in San Jose. We found it took anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 1/4 hours to get to downtown San Jose, despite the hotel brochure stating that it was 30 minutes away.
The rooms were clean and functional, and all of our meals were good. As a place to stay on a short stopover, it was quite decent. But I wouldn't select this hotel as a base of operations for sightseeing. It's really not that convenient to any of Costa Rica's many attractions.

This hotel was to be our first example of "In Style" with our holiday group but what a disappointment it turned out to be! The rooms though spacious had very worn bedding, cheap pilled nylon. It was so remote that there was no way you could see anything of the surrounding area except by taxi.

As it was at a high altitude the wind whipped through the foyer which was also the site of the bar. We had just escaped temperatures of minus 4 in Britain and found ourselves huddled round a log fire trying to keep warm. The staff, though asked on several occasions, refused to close the main door to make us more comfortable. Guest comfort was not high on their list of priorities!

The menu was over fussy and when our meals arrived were inedible and had to be sent back. Again staff arrogance was apparent. Finally one of our group lost her walking boots which were clearly tied to her luggage.

If you have booked this hotel, take a warm fleece and eat in the bar round the log fire.
