“Acceptable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

I went to Costa Rica with a group from my church. There were about 26 of us split between about 9 rooms. The rooms varied from completely fine (my room) to somewhat run down. There were ants in some of the rooms, but they didn't seem to bother anyone. When we first arrived, one room had a broken AC unit. The hotel staff quickly moved that group to another room, so it was no big deal. We had breakfast each morning at the hotel. The food was basic, but acceptable. There are three choices for breakfast: 1) toast, eggs (scrabbled or fried), and juice; 2) toast, jelly and butter, and juice; and 3) fruit and juice. Coffee was also included.
The hotel has a pool and wifi. I was not able to get the wifi to work in my room but it worked fine by the reception area. There were monkeys in the trees around the pool several days. Cute, but noisy.
We were careful to keep things locked up, and as far as I know no one from our group had anything stolen. The hotel staff was nice but there did not seem to be many of them. They seemed to be honest. For example, my wife and I are in the habit of leaving a tip for the maid on our bed when we leave the room. The maid would not even take the tip. Each day that money was stacked on our night stand. However, I agree with a previous commenter that there is no real security here. The Hotel gate opens up onto the main street of Tamarindo. As far as I could tell, no one noticed who came in or who left. But, as I said, no one in our rather large group had anything stolen.
I enjoyed my stay here very much, but I cannot honestly say that this hotel was the key factor.....It is not a bad place, but be aware of what you are getting into.
By the way, I don't know the details, but I think they gave us a pretty good group rate....

“Quiet and peaceful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2011

I stayed here for 7 days I found it very relaxing and quiet compared to the bustle of Tamarindo. The room was basic yet cosy and clean and with all the amenities like AC and Wifi. The surroundings are tranquil and relaxing and if you are luck you get to hear the owner sing some opera at breakfast !!

“Great hotel very quiet, and in the center of everything”

Hello All

Yes I was one out of meny that got stranded by the ash claud from island. and because I couldn't go home I had to find a hotel that was both central, good and low priced, and I can only say the tropicana is all that.

it helps if you speak spanish because most of the help doesn't speak a word of english and also the kitchen lady can be kinda mean, if you come to breakfast 15 mins before it closes. But it is all part of the charm

“Best Value for money ever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2010

We arrived there because the taxi from Tamarindo Airport drove us there. From the outside the place looks nice and more expensive than what really is. When we enter the reception is very basic and ugly. The price for a room for 2 was USD 40 with breakfast included. For 2 rooms (1 person per room) we got a price of USD 30 each, which was excellent, considering for that price you usually get a shared bathroom room or a dirty hostel. Rooms were clean, with a/c, safe box, TV, ok bed. Pillows need to be improved!!

The swiming pool is nice. It was dark (we went in the evenings) but once we asked at the reception they turned the lights on.

Breakfast was only a plate of tropical fruits and a coffee and a glass of juice. I missed some cereals or bread.

“Surfers Welcome! (and for the same deal as all the other hotels!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2009

For my first time down in Playa Giuones, which was not only a beautiful place all on it own, Hotel Tropicana was the icing on the cake. Being a tiny bit further from the beach than all of the other 'surfer' hotels, it was nice to escape and relax between sessions. We had room #4, which was the furthest from the reception and pool area, however, we had a direct walkway to the parking lot and our outside sitting area was on the side and very private.

Our long boards fit fine inside, and since our boards get heavy after carrying them for a 10 min walk, we would load the SUV and drive to the 'main' lot, close to the palm tree. We also had some friends staying at the other hotels like the Iguana, and we had the same deal, or better!

So for the price and location, proximity and cleanliness, I would absolutely stay there again!
