This is a good property that could be so much better as far as grounds and service. The rooms were very nice and as pictured, the breakfast buffet was good and extensive, but the grounds were so plain and unattractive, as well as the beach area, which had some flimsy umbrellas and no ambiance at all. Those same flimsy umbrellas mar an otherwise beautiful pool area that had great towels and pillows, as well as nice cushiony lounge chairs. After watching the periodic strong wind gusts throw umbrellas into the pool and on top of people,
it would seem that they should be replaced with sturdier ones, not to mention better looking.
The service was mostly pleasant but not on the ball and somewhat indifferent. Compared to numerous Mexican vacations where the staff was beyond solicitous, I was surprised that a high end property charging $500 a night would allow this. There were many pool guys but it was hard to get their attention at times for drinks or towels. The hostesses at the Mansita restaurant didn't really seem to know what they were doing, but the manager was very efficient and understood when we grabbed an outside table ourselves rather than wait for the numerous tables for 6 or 8 (but with only 2's sitting at them) to open up. Why they had so many large tables outside when most people travel in 2's or 4's was a mystery to me. Also, the concierge never answered their phone even though we tried many times to get through, and when we went in person, had no menus for any off property restaurants. Additionally, there was a guy at the pool walking around with the hotel menus trying to get people to make reservations. These two things really disturbed me and I have never been to a high end property like this that wouldn't help people use the restaurants in the nearby town. The lack of information and misinformation was a big issue. Serious training needs to be done to have the staff be more accessible, informative, and helpful to guests. We ended up using a wonderful private service for transportation and a tour called Costa Rica Vision, however, who have an office at the hotel. They were more expensive, but worth the extra money as their BMW SUV's were far more comfortable on the bumpy roads than the hotel shuttle bus. Juan Pablo took us to a nearby adventure park called Buena Vista and it was very reasonable and really fun. Highly recommend using them as they are knowledgable and helpful about the area as well. We had a good time all in all, but hope the hotel will work on some of these issues because it really has the potential to be so much better.
