“Weird vibe”

I recently stayed at The Tico Adventure Lodge. I would like to start by saying the front office and cleaning staff were very helpful and friendly. One actually came in on her day off to say goodbye and bring us a going away present. The rooms are pretty clean but small (not that we needed much space). The matresses and pillows may have been the most uncomfortable I have ever used and of course there were ants and beetles, but I guess that comes with being in the tropics.
With all that being said, I would love to give this resort a great review, unfourtunately because of Chris the owner I am not able to. We found our dealings with him a little strange. It seems he is always drinking and becomes quite rude when he's had "a few too many". At one point my friends and I were sitting enjoying beverages while he and his local friends were about to start a poker game. My wife had come up and said to him that there was a couple at the front door wondering about availability. Not only did he just look at my wife and go back to his game, but he left us to go and deal with his customers. I get that you are entertaining people, but the game hadn't started and my wife offered to go down and he ignored her. He likes to brag about a lot of things and the sense I get is that he grew up a spoiled brat and has a massive sense of entitlement. I'm a big boy and I can deal with little man syndrome, but to be rude to my wife and my other female friends is uncalled for. Again, very friendly staff and immaculate grounds, even the owners wife is great (bless her heart for dealing with him), but he made or stay feel a little uncomfortable. Hope yours is better. On a side note, I believe that C&C surf school is owned by Chris' brother Charlie. We had a very positive experience with the instructors and Charlie himself.

“Great place we loved it”

Very friendly and accomodating staff, the rooms are small but we didn't need anything bigger, walking distance to the beach and restaurants

“Dishonest and greedy”

We paid for one week at the Tico Adventure Lodge. After telling us that they would give us a discount, they instead charged us the full price. After three nights there, we decided not to stay in Samara but to visit Monteverde. We let the lady working know that we would be checking out, and she told us that she didn't have to refund any of our money even though we had four nights left. After some discussion, she said she would refund only one night. After arguing and discussing with another man, we finally were refunded for two nights and they kept the money for two nights that we didn't stay there. I was incredibly unsatisfied with the costumer service at Tico's Adventure Lodge. I found our final interactions to be very rude, and I would recommend that people find another place to stay or consider paying for only one night at a time in case you need to cancel.

“New Mattresses, very comfy beds!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We travelled around Costa Rica and planned to stay one night in Playa Samara, but we stayed two nights instead due to the comfy beds, clean rooms, good vibe, and nice beach around the corner. To tell you the truth we did not plan to go to Tico adventure lodge, but ended up here after driving around in circles to find the hotel of our first choice,...That might have been the best thing that happened to us during our trip. We got more than we expected for that kind of cash ($35 per night)!! We definately recommend it; Pura Vida!!!

“Love the building and the room but horrible mattress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

My friend and I stayed at Tico Adventure Lodge in Samara Beach in early June 2011. The check-in was a bit confusing, as we arrived when the office should have been open, but no one was around. We called out and rang the bell for several minutes before giving up and going to get some food and drinks. We came back about an hour later and the owner was there to help us check in. He let us see the room first and then we were able to check in.
The room was smallish, but enough room. The bathroom had enough room. Each room has a great little balcony with chairs and a hammock and little table. The grounds here are absolutely gorgeous.
The major downside to Tico Adventure Lodge is the mattress. Like the other reviewers, I was pretty appalled by the state of the mattress. The springs were poking through absolutely everywhere. If not for the mattress, I would have given a very good rating.
Also, it can be very loud at night when it rains, as there are tin roofs. This doesn't bother me too much (I always travel with earplugs) but light sleepers should be aware.
Morning coffee was much appreciated, hot and tasty! They also have a book exchange in the lobby, making it easy to drop off a completed book and pick up another.
The hostel is about a 5 minute walk from the beach, so the location makes things a bit hotter than being on the beach but the air con unit in the room was a real trooper, making it very comfortable at night.
The internet connection seemed to work well for my friend who had to work a lot of the time.
I'd love stay there again, but only if the mattresses were replaced!
