“Gorgeous, but hard to get to.”

This hotel is ranked as one of the top 100 small luxury hotels of the world. It deserves this title, but given how treacherous the roads are and how it is a 6 hour drive from Manuel Antonio or Arenal - I don't think it's worth it the journey. The food is amazing, probably the best we had in Costa Rica, but also more expensive than any where else. A milkshake by the private beach (non-alcoholic) was $14!! The pool is an infinity pool that looks out on the ocean which is incredible. They can arrange for a private dinner on the beach for a couple or family for $250 a couple. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The rooms are little bungalows with a privacy jacuzzi and hammock! The service is impeccable and staff very friendly. Just keep in mind the roads getting here are terrible and there are no lights. The beach by the hotel is just okay - stony sands and underdeveloped. If you are looking for an isolated hotel far away from everything and have a few days to spend and some money, then definitely visit, but from what I saw Costa Rica is more about the adventures/activities - and there are definitely much nicer beaches in the country if you are looking for a beach vacation.

Please receive our heartfelt thanks for taking the time to review Hotel Punta Islita. Your insights are valuable to the Trip Advisor community and are essential to us as an opportunity to improve our services.

I am delighted to learn that you found the quality of our cuisine top-notch! We have been gradually reviewing our menu and are implementing a broader range of options that will greatly improve our value proposition.

The private beach dinner is truly an amazing experience and I am thrilled that you and your family had a chance to enjoy such a wonderful bonding activity. Horseback riding, river kayaking, monkey expeditions, and canopy zip-lining are other family favorites.

Regarding transportation logistics, we generally recommend making Hotel Punta Islita your first stop from either San Jose (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) because you can opt for convenient ground or local air transportation. Islita is definitely a secluded beach and this seclusion greatly accounts for the wonderful sense of privacy and boundless nature that characterizes us.

Once again, thank you for choosing Costa Rica and Hotel Punta Islita as your family travel destinations!

Amazing property with exceptional staff. The resort has everything you need for families or adults. My kids played golf for free as part of the kids club. You can walk to town easily, and there is snorkeling right off the beach too.

“Amazing view and fabulous service”

My husband and I went to Punta Islita with another couple and we were blown away by the service. It was the thirdt stop on our Costa Rica vacation and by far the best all-around experience. I had seen Punta Islita on a list of top ten hotels in Costa Rica, but I was still hesitant because it is an unknown boutique, which, in CR can be disappointing. Not so! The rooms were good---not 5-star luxury, but very nice and clean. I rated sleep a 3 because the bed wasn't awesome. The views, set into a hillside/cliff overlooking a huge cove, were breathtaking. The service was unmatched. My friend was injured in a surfing accident and the hotel manager arranged everything to get her to San Jose as fast as possible---flight out immediately, taxi straight from the tarmac to the hospital, hotel recervation in san jose, and flight to Tamarindo, our next destination. The accident happened at 4PM and she was getting stitches by 7:30PM in San Jose. We were on the golft course in Tamarindo by noon the next day. Truly remarkable. He called to check in a number of times and made our check out super easy.
OK, back to the hotel: great little 9-hole golf course to get your fix, impressive zip lines on property, surfing, boogie boarding, pool on the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, incredible star gazing.
Food: breakfast is excellent. Stick with local fare for lunch---best dishes are ceviche and chicken quesadilla. Burger, not-so-much. Dinner, food is OK, but the setting is so beautiful it doesn't matter. Wine is pricey, but they will bring you high end stemware if you ask for it. Pineapple mojitos are delicious.
I would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view and pay the extra few bucks for a luxe room.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Trip Advisor Community. Hotel Punta Islita's parent company, Grupo Islita is a well-established destination developer and manager. As a Costa Rican enterprise, we are delighted to have a chance to showcase our country's wonders in world-class comfort.

Please send our regards to your friend! Although we are located in a secluded ocean cove, we have emergency response procedures in place. Glad to hear these were seamlessly executed after the surfing incident.

Your comments have been noted and we thank you for the opportunity to help us improve our services. Warmest regards and best wishes for an uplifting 2012.

Thank you to Frommer's who indicated this little place is a true gem! Truly correct! My Boyfriend and I went to C.R. for my birthday and decided to head North as we went for his birthday in May to the South. We decided to go somewhere new and although the drive was long, bumpy, and the rain had created high rivers, it was totally worth it! We loved the food, drinks and ambiance. This place was just stunning and I would give this place a 12 out of 10! service was amazing and the beach club was just a delight! We are once again going in May 2012. It was totally secluded and just wonderful !!!!

Room Tip: Casitas overlooking southeast are private, secluded, and wonderful (room #!12)

“Pura Vida!”

Booked the " Love in Costa Rica, Romance in the Wild" package for our honeymoon and chose to end our trip here. Made reservations for our activities and spa treatment beforehand. Great location, staff, and experience. We were welcomed with cool towels by the staff after our 4 hr transfer from our other hotel. Received a welcome drink while checking in. The property is well maintained. We had a room with a ocean view with a outdoor jacuzzi and hammock on our deck. We had scheduled a monkey safari shortly after our arrival, so a quick lunch was made for us (despite the main restaurant being closed for lunch!), and then we were off! We found 3 different clans of howler monkeys at two locations, then took a quick detour to a beach for more great scenery. During our stay, we also did surfing lessons, the sunset horseback ride, and the mangrove kayaking. All of our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. A breakfast buffet is included. Lunch is offered at the beach club daily and on weekends in the main restaurant. Dinner is offered nightly at the main restaurant and at the beach club on weekends. We ended up having dinner at the in town restaurant Cambute (free van ride!) twice as it was good quality while being half the price of the hotel restaurant 1492. I do recommend trying both though. We chose to end our Honeymoon here because we needed some R&R after the busy-ness of the 1st part of our trip. Lounging at the beach club and swimming in the pool(s) and ocean was heavenly along with our awesome spa treatment. Service by all the staff members was top notch. Thanks!

Muchas gracias for detailing your stay with us on Trip Advisor. Delighted to learn that you fully enjoyed some of Costa Rica's best vistas and most exciting eco-adventures. Thanks for the nod to our hospitality and services. Cambute Restaurant is a charming little dining spot owned by a local community member (Cambute is his life-long nickname). We encourage our guests to visit our neighbor villages to fully experience authentic Costa Rica and we love it when local entrepreneurs receive rave reviews from our guests.

I have to say that spotting howler monkeys is a personal favorite. Their loud growls and athletic antics are truly memorable. Glad to learn that you had a chance to spot three clans! Amazing!

Thanks again for your post. Best wishes for an outstanding 2012!
