“Laid back contemporary nature-lover surfer”

My husband and I stayed here for 2 of our 7 night vacay in Costa Rica Guanacaste region. We stayed in the brand new rooms/suites by the pool which were beautifully decorated, in a minimalistic yet comfortable way. Right up my alley. My hubbie surfed the break which is located right at the nature trail across the street to the beach while I laid out at the pool and read. The only thing that was even the slightest bit negative, and is only negative because I am not a cat person, is that a skinny feline (don't know if it was feral or not) decided that she would try to get into the room every time we opened the sliding glass door and also wouldn't get off the chaise on the porch several times when I tried to shoo it away. It decided to spray the porch for revenge so that stank. Otherwise, 5 star experience. Food was awesome, people were friendly, we saw a leatherback turtle climb up the beach, lay her eggs and crawl back down the beach. Meanwhile, 2 of her eggs hatched and we saw little teeny baby sea turtles, so unbelievably cute. If you want to go horseback riding mostly on the beach but a little bit in the mountains, get them to book you a trip in Playa Brasalito. We cantered along the beach forever. AWESOME. 2 hour trip we did in the morning before it got too hot. Overall, the best hotel we stayed at during our vacation. And for comparison, we stayed 3 nights at the JW Marriott (beautiful grounds, awful food, and a whole other review) and 2 night at the Hotel Diria in Tamarindo (again, beautiful grounds but when you leave to go anywhere in Tamarindo, you are stalked by the locals peddling souvenirs and sometimes offered various recreational drugs). When we go back to CR, we will be staying here again.

Room Tip: New suites are a bit pricey but very spacious with kitchenettes. Otherwise, just book a regular cabi...

“Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Ripjack is a very beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. Imediate access to the beach, bar and restuarnt on top of the rooms and very helpful with planning excursions. A few downfalls, the kitchen was right above our room so we heard people talking, walking, dropping things. Also the beds were a bit uncomfortable. There were a few times local dogs came in and people had to break up dog fights, in the middle of the dining area.
The staff were very nice, food was excellent! and happy hour prices were on point. TV and wifi access in the bar area as well. All in all it was a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: I would request a room far away from the dining area, it was difficult to sleep at times with all th...

“True paradise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

My girlfriend and I arrived in Playa Grande at sunset. We were blown away by how big and gorgeous this beach was. To make things even more perfect, the RipJack Inn is only 30 feet from the beach!

We originally began our trip about an hour north of playa grande. It was terrible. So, with some Googling we found and called the RipJack Inn. Nubia immediately sent us a car and we arrived to our wonderful bungalow. It was brand new with AC, mini fridge, ceiling fan, two beds, and TV.

The restaurant and bar is excellent with sushi nights every week! The service is amazing, as is the food. There is no center of town, so the RipJack is all you'll have. Though, breakfast, lunch and dinner at RipJack is to die for. Even the wine is good!

“Convivial, close to a great beach and very hospitable.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

A tastefully designed hotel with access to surf and sand. If you want to stand a chance of seeing giant leatherback turtles laying their eggs, this is a great place to stay. The staff are friendly. The rooms are very clean and the interior decor has an Asian ambience. There is no shortage of advice if you want a guided tour or need a little local insight. The upstairs bar and dining area has an open view of the coastal vegetation and the glimmer of the pacific behind. The food was variable in quality, meat and lobster tails were tough going! The sushi was excellent. One aspect which may, or may not, appeal is a focus on televised American ball games. The support for these games while I was there was a little over the top and the language fluent! It may have been the wrong time but if my children had been there I would have been very upset! The hotel does have a considerable American influence but at the same time it is multi cultural in its appeal and appears to attract discerning travellers who have chosen their location thoughtfully.
