Don't get this place confused with the hotel near Rincon de la Vieja. The Hotel Guanacaste is located a couple of blocks from the Liberia bus station. It is a convenient location in that way, and looks nice from the outside. The rooms are a different matter. I chose the one bedroom with fan for roughly $13 american. It was small and looked just like a prison cell.It did not seem particularly clean and the bed was uncomfortable. On the plus side the courtyard looked nice and the staff were pleasant. There is a bar on site too. But unless you need to be near the bus station I would recommend staying at Hotel Liberia or Posada del Tope

Our one mistake on our Central American trip. We chose it for the location, just a short walk from the bus station, as we were only doing an overnight before moving on to Nicaragua. The reality of the room is htat it is NOTHING like the photos on their website! It wasn't clean, nor was the bathroom, it was just one of those horrible places that you just wanna get through to the next morning asap. As it's supposed to be a part of the International Hostelling Chain, we thought it would do for a night, but not so. We resorted to a few drinks in the bar that evening to knock us out quick, and then rising early and showering quick. We thought about staying at the Best Western, but then persevered. One thing that was terrific however, was the manager. The most helpul guy you could meet, he had all the details for buses into Nicaragua, you could book direct with him, and the buses literally stopped outside the place! So that saved us a lot of time and effort the next morning. Had we stayed somewhere else, that ould have uktimately been a lot more hassle (although probably more comfort too...)

this is the lowest of the lowest still at a ridicule price of $55 for 2 bunkbeds (sleep 4). The room was so small it felt like a prison cell, just the space for the beds really. Our bags ended up sleeping with us! The ants and god knows what else were crawling everywhere. The shower flooded the bathroom (private bathroom!). The sheets, the towels, the walls... everything looked in needs of a lot of TLC. it was the only place we could find the day before NewYear's eve.... and I barely slept. We'll definitly organized ourselves in a different way next time! Remember that Costa Rica can get very busy, so book in advance.
