Poas Volcano Lodge was our third destination, and the nicest hotel, during our first visit to Costa Rica in January. What a beautiful place. The hotel is a contemporary fieldstone and timber-frame structure situated in serenely beautiful rolling hills above 6,000 feet. It is on the grounds of a dairy farm and is surrounded by views of the lush natural landscape. The hotel is about 15 minutes from Poas Volcano park at an elevation above 8,000 feet and a must see, and 5 minutes from the town of Poacito with shops, supermarket, gas station and El Charasco, a nice, affordable, restaurant with excellent food. We visited the Doka Coffee plantation about 30 – 45 minutes away where we purchased some excellent Costa Rican coffee to take home. The temperature in January ranged from about 40F to 75F and we were glad we brought long pants and jackets with us. We stayed in the junior suite. It was a little larger than the standard room, but smaller, and less expensive, than the rooms located in the main building. The room was clean with an en-suite bathroom and ample hot water. It was on the small side but more than ample for the amount of time we stayed in the room.
The main building of the lodge is elegant coziness with a comfortable great room and dining room heated by small woodstoves. The lodge has about 12 rooms for guests. It never felt crowded but was very conducive to meeting fellow travelers and getting to know the warm and very friendly and helpful staff. The dining room had about 7 tables surrounded by glass walls that provided views of the mountains and wildlife. Breakfast consisted of a variety of hot options, including “typicale” Costa Rican (Tico) cuisine that was prepared in the kitchen, and cold cereals, fruit and juices offered buffet style. Dinner at the lodge was similarly very good and moderately priced. In the evening we would lounge in the great room in the main building reading or sending emails using the hotels wifi network.
Our stay at Poas Volcano Lodge was an option we added to our trip and we were very glad we did. We look forward to a return visit.
