“Luxurious resort, but some mixed feelings remain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

We spent some nights at the Nayara Arenal Resort in mid January 2012.

The property is really beautiful, lush gardens with lots of little birds flying around. The bungalow itself was tastefully decorated and provided all luxury you might expect from it. But....upon booking and before arrival we wrote to the resort asking if there are mosquito nets in the rooms and the windows -they wrote that there were no mosquito nets covering the beds, but that there are mosquito nets at the windows and doors -surprisingly there was only a net protecting the toilet window and the shower door at the front side of the bungalow and no nets at all on the rear side windows and doors. So be aware of this.

The breakfast buffet was absolutely excellent. They serve a large variety of delicious items, warm and cold dishes, freshly prepared omelets, different cakes, fruit, cheese, fresh vegetables, even readily-prepared sandwiches for take away. Unfortunately, most of the restaurant staff was quite arrogant and unfriendly. Reception staff, however, was very friendly and extremely helpful all the time.

At mid of January the construction site was still there. You could not really sit by the pool and relax during their work time (till approximately 4.30 pm on most days), workers walked through the place carrying things without any regard to guests. Besides this, there was several maintenance work in progress: we one day left our bungalow finding some workers directly at our front door pathway telling us that they are printing some parts of the bungalow's wall today. Next day, they were painting the hot pools with a strongly smelling color that could be smelled all over the pool area's place.

One very sad point -last, but by far not least: all the parrots around the pool area can not fly because the resort decided to cut their back wings which can be clearly seen. We were told that the parrots used to fly around in former times but then started to fly into the restaurant which bothered guests. For us as bird lovers unbearably sad to see these beautiful birds just sitting there waiting to be taken for a photo or to be put (in)to the next tree. We talked to the staff concerning this and we recently also contacted one of the resort's owners -he obviously did not know about it and told us that the practice of cutting the birds feathers will be immediately stopped -sounds like a turning point. Let's hope. Future guests will see.

We can recommend staying here, if it becomes true that the parrots will fly again. If not, as too sad to see, we would not return.

Dear valued guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with others.
We take your candid comments very seriously and will definitely address the attitude that you mentioned with the entire restaurant team. This is quite disheartening as the staff has always been our strength and we have had no comments like this to date.
With regards to the mosquitoes, it has never been an issue before so we are a bit surprised. Based on our location high-up in the rainforest, mosquitoes are not very common, however we will certainly review this situation with our grounds crew.
Construction is finished and we are thrilled with the opening of the new Sushi Amor, which is unlike any other dining option in the area. We only did minor maintenance this week to expand our bakery as we were able to hire one of the top Pastry Chefs in Costa Rica which will positively impact our guest experience.
Should you need to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Jorge Gutierrez

“Pure Paradise!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This hotel is absolutely amazing! My experience at this hotel was nothing short of perfection. This staff is so helpful, and the setting is beautiful. The views of the Arenal volcano from every room are jaw dropping!! The restaurant is delicious, I ordered a special sushi roll that had interesting tropical ingredients, and it was the best thing I ate my whole time in Costa Rica. Definitely stop by the wine bar as well, it is a cozy and perfect way to end your night. Nayara was one of the most beautiful and romantic places I have ever seen and I would love to go back one day!

“The Best Hotel I Have Ever Stayed at – MUCH BETTER THAN THE SPRINGS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We stayed at Arenal Nayara from February 8-10, 2012. This was the third of a 4 hotel, weeklong tour of Costa Rica to celebrate our 10-year anniversary.

This is by far the nicest hotel I have stayed at for any price, but for the price we paid it could not be beat. We also stayed at the Springs Resort, and PLEASE trust me to not believe the hype and save yourself some money. Stay here and with the money you save you can get massages every day and may still have enough left over to put the kids through college.

Arrival: We arrived early (about 11:00) due to heavy rain delaying our zip-line excursion to a later date. The initial feeling is that the hotel has a clean open spa-like feel. The entry was busy with guests checking out, but they had no problems checking us in early, and even were able to have our room cleaned by about 11:30 which I was very impressed by since I was just hoping to relax on the grounds until the 3:00 check-in. An important thing I need to say here is that on arrival I was asked my name by about every staff member in the resort. Initially this was a bit annoying, but I noticed they NEVER asked again… Because they all MEMORIZED it!!!! It was AMAZING!!! I was called by my name from about 1:00 on the day of check in to the day we left. The staff was always smiling and went out of their way to make you comfortable. The small details that they excelled at allowed them to provide the best, most personalized service I have ever experienced on a vacation.

Room: The rooms are among the most beautiful I have seen for the price. Extremely clean and the view is amazing. The patio was so secluded you forgot you weren’t the only one around. We actually had rooms between us and the volcano, but the resort is so well laid out that we didn’t know it until the last morning when we took a wrong turn and were commenting about how lucky we were to not have a room deeper in the resort like the one we were pointing at, and we realized we were actually point at our room.... Even when we got back I had difficulty seeing the rooms below us even knowing they were there. Also housekeeping leaves little left over un-served pieces from breakfast in the rooms as snacks, so we would get either fruit or some pastries in the fridge. It was wonderful. There is also a hot tub on the patio and an outside shower off of the bathroom, which was very nice.

Restaurant: Again when we first arrived and sat down, Jose arrived and said, “welcome to Nayara, you are new to the resort” and asked our names… and never forgot for the rest of the stay. The food was among the best (non-local type) food we had in Costa Rica, wonderful salads and beef tenderloins, and I would have probably paid $10-15 for the breakfast buffet and still have been pleased (and its included). It was certainly our best breakfast in Costa Rica. A couple of small details are that the coffee is always served in a French press and is the best we had in Costa Rica, and the pool barware is heavy duty plastic glasses so you feel like you are getting a $8-10 drink, not like you are at the all inclusive in Cancun on spring break drinking out of solo glasses

Grounds: You can tell it is a small hotel, feels much more “tucked-in” and secluded than any other hotel. Nice pool, but no hot-spring like its competitors. I would advise staying here and getting a day or night pass to Talbacon for your hot-spring fix, it was wonderful. Most beautiful grounds of any hotel we stayed at on the trip. Birds and flowers EVERYWERE!!! They had a few hotel Macaws as well, 1 Scarlet and 2 Blue. Don’t listen to any resort that says they have the “best” view of Arenal. I will let you know that the volcano is frequently covered in clouds, but more importantly it is so large they ALL have the best view, and Nayara’s view is breath-taking.

OVERALL: This is the best resort top-to-bottom I have ever stayed at and it comes in at a price that you don’t feel bad leaving the grounds to actually see the country you are visiting. I have never seen a staff that is so happy and delighted to help. Even when they thought no one was looking they were still smiling, which is an amazing trait in a staff. You can not do better than this hotel in Arenal, and we are eager to return. While checking out we were complimenting the manager on the quality of the hotel staff and he made the statement that he felt that the most important aspect of a hotel for guests is the staff, and it truly shows through the experience at Nayara
