“Not a great place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

They misplaced our reservation, so we ended up spending an hour in the lobby waiting for things to get sorted out. Our guide from Desafio stayed the whole time until everything was ok. But the lady at the front desk was not very accommodating. She kept apologizing to us in English but then telling the tour guide in Spanish that it was our problem, not hers. Our guide kept requesting that he would stay until everything was sorted out, just let us go enjoy the spa. But she said until we proved that we had paid ahead of time (this Hotel did not give us a voucher like many of the other hotels had) she would not let us go anywhere. Then she would turn to us and apologize in English again (she didn't realize we could speak Spanish). The food in the restaurant very average. Although the spa was nice, the frustration with everything else ruined our stay. The guests next us were also having a problem getting what they had paid for, unfortunately, they didn't have a very helpful tour guide handling the hotels reservation problem.

“Relaxing, beautiful hotel.”

We stayed here for 3 nights in late January. It was just a 2 minute drive from town, close enough but far enough to be quite relaxing. Our room had a porch overlooking the nice grounds of the hotel and the volcano. The staff was also very helpful throughout our stay. Very clean hotel also, highly recommend.

“Beautiful grounds, excellent staff, great balcony with views!”

From the moment we arrived at Casa Luna, we felt so welcomed! The front desk manager (Danny) was the best throughout our stay! He provided us so much valuable information on tours to book and places to go while in La Fortuna. The hotel is a walking distance to the Arenal water falls, however it is totally uphill and although I think I'm in pretty good shape (spin 3 times per week) it was a hard climb. It is also only a 15-20 minute walk into La Fortuna so we never had to use a cab from there. The room was open and light and the balcony was wonderful! The only thing negative was the room needed to be aired out really well before our stay as it was very musty. The food in the restaurant was fabulous and all of the wait staff were kind and attentive! It seemed like everyone there really enjoyed their work. And the free breakfasts were a definite plus! I would highly recommend this hotel as an option for visiting Arenal.

Room Tip: Definitely choose a second floor room if you have the option as the balcony really makes a differenc...

Thank you for that amazing comment! It truly inspires and motivate us to improve everyday! We have shared your comments with our staff and they are very happy to know what you had a pleasant stay in our hotel. We are very glad you enjoyed our restaurant and tours as much as we enjoyed serving you. It was a real pleasure to have you stay with us.
We do however apologize for the musty smells in the rooms, we try very hard to get rid of the musty smell as best as we can but its very difficult specially in a such a humid weather like La Fortuna.
You are now part of our family and we would love to have you back. Muchas Gracias!

“Beautiful property, Great view (depending on the weather)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I will start with the good: Casa Luna is an affordable and beautiful hotel. The grounds are well maintained and the pool is really nice. It has an excellent view of the volcano but at the moment there is no lava so at night you can't see it. Also, keep in mind that the area tends to be very foggy so there is a chance you will not get to see the volcano at all. This obviously is not the hotels fault but just something to keep in mind. The rooms are comfortable and the balcony is really nice. Please make sure to get a room on the second floor as I am not sure if you will be able to see the volcano on the first. Their breakfast is pretty good too and is included.

And for the bad:
First, the spa prices are pretty high so if you are going just for that I would avoid this place. Second, you will need a car to stay here if you want to go to the town at any point. Finally, the staff is fairly deceitful when recommending things so don't even bother trying to book anything through them or ask for advice. For example, I was inquiring about the different hot springs. I wanted to go to Tabacon and knew that they have a $40 night time fee (I know its pricey but I really recommend this place). However, when I asked about the rates the staff member insisted that Tabacon only had a full day package with dinner and that I should book through them as soon as possible. When I asked about the night time rate she shook her head and insisted that the all day rate was the only thing offered. Now, I understand that the hotel wants to push things that it gets kickbacks for, but I was a little annoyed that they didn't even want to acknowledge the night time rate of the spa. This is one example of similar experiences talking to the staff. Also, don't exchange your money here. There is a bank in town that will give you a much better rate.

I would have given this hotel four stars if I didn't have similar experiences throughout our stay. Overall the value and view was worth the price but the staff would make me hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room on the second floor!

Thank you very much for your great comment and recommendations. Your feedback is taken very seriously in order to improve everyday.
We are very happy that you had enjoyed our hotel and rooms as much as we enjoyed serving you.
We take pride in our personalized service, we are however very sorry about the service and information provided about Tabacon Hot Springs.
I would like to apologize on behalf of the staff. They rate we provide for Tabacon its $70 for entrance and dinner after 6pm. There other rate without dinner is $45 and its after 6pm as well, this last rate however its only for walk-ins at the hot springs, we do not sell that service because its only provided for the Tabacon Hot springs itself. For that reason we once again apologize for not being more clear about those details.
Regarding our spa prices we are proud to have great therapist and to provide a great service at a very affordable price, we are sorry those prices seemed to expensive for you, however we are always open to give discounts and offers at the spa.
Our hotel is located 1.8 miles from the town, its a walkable distance or you may even get a taxi for $3-4 each way. We would recommend getting a car but if you don't have one there is many options to ge to town. We are very closed to town compare to other hotels, our location is key between feeling away from the city but still enough to go on a 4 minute drive.
When it comes to changing money, Costa Rican banks have different rates that change everyday, we check the exchange rate daily and establish it according to our favorite bank, so yes it could be possible that another bank had a better exchange rate, but who was time on vacation to go bank hoping to find the best exchange rate when you have the chance to exchange your money right at the front desk!
We are very thankful for your recommendations. Even though our majority of reviews talk about how great our customer service are, we are very sorry there was an inconvinience for the hot springs information. We hope you come back again and get a chance to see the volcano erupting again and hopefully it wont be cloudy!

“Beautiful grounds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We spent two nights here with a Gate 1 tour. The room had a microwave & fridge. I really liked the walk-in shower. The towels were a little frayed but soft & white. The grounds are beautifully maintained. We didn't use the pool but it looked very clean.
We only had breakfast in the restaurant which was basic & hot. The staff were very helpful and spoke English well.
Our main problems were the sporadic free wifi and the hotel is located too far from town to walk. Our room had a musty odor upon entering and was set up to turn all power to the room off when you left the room, so every time we returned had to tolerate the smell until it cleared.

Thank you for comment, it is our pleasure to serve you! We are very happy that you had enjoyed our rooms, restaurant and grounds. We also want to thank you for addressing things that did not meet your expectations. We take every suggestion in consideration so we can improve on a daily basis. We do apologize for any inconvenience that you might have with the wi fi going off in the rooms, we do however have two computers available in the front desk and another wi fi network as well.
Regarding distance to town, we are only 1.8 miles away from La Fortuna downtown, that is a lot closer than many other hotels (besides the ones in town actually) and a cab ride is only $3-4 dollars.
La Fortuna is a very humid place, and we have constant rains which give us a lot of issues with musty odors, we try really hard to use our dehumidifier and open the windows when possible, so we are very sorry about the musty smell.
Like you mentioned we work with an energy saving system that goes hand to hand with our green philosophy and part of the sustainable certification program that we are part of. So every time you leave the room the power goes off to try to save energy and care about the environment. Once again we do apologize for the issue but it's very difficult to deal with specially in a humid rainy area like Arenal.
We do hope to see you again very soon!
