We stayed at the Tree Houses from February 6-8, 2012. This was the second of a 4 hotel, weeklong tour of Costa Rica to celebrate our 10-year anniversary.
This was a wonderful addition to the itinerary and allowed us to have a more back to nature feel and save some money at the same time.
Arrival: We arrived at about 4:00 in the afternoon following a trip in from La Paz. We were greeted by the managers Mark and Lucy who were both wonderful and extremely friendly and helpful. The initial appearance is that the setting is more rustic than a standard hotel, but there were hummingbirds and beautiful flowers everywhere, you almost had to dodge the hummingbirds there were so many. It was a bit of a walk to the room and there was no offer to assist us with our luggage, so I would have your driver stay until you finish check-in, we had to carry ours.
Room: The rooms are similar to a mountain cabin rental in the United States. They are sparsely furnished, but more than adequate. The shower has the upper 1/3 open to the outside (screened), which is strange at first, but very enjoyable. It rained heavily both nights and the roof is metal, so it sounded like we were in a drum at times, but I guess that is part of the experience.
Restaurant: No restaurant on grounds to speak of. They will direct you to one about ¼ mile down the road, which was very good. No English when we were there, but between my broken Spanish and the servers broken English my wife and I had a wonderful meal with great views. The hotel did include a wonderful breakfast that was VERY good. Lots of bird feeders in the area and it was amazing. The first morning we had to leave early so they left some fruit and granola in the fridge and it was very nice. Also every morning they bring coffee to the porch, which was great.
Grounds: Very secluded. We saw a family of 7-8 howler monkeys on our own. Kind of amazing experience, no guide, no glass, nothing but my wife and I looking up into the trees and watching them eat. One of the greatest moments of the trip. They also have a night watchman who was very nice who would love to walk you around and show you night creatures for as long as you want. I imagine it really helps break-up his night. He wouldn’t even take our tip after showing us a lot of sleeping birds and other animals on a walk from the front gate (he met us there when we had a late drop off from a tour, which was a very nice feature since it is a reasonable walk through the woods to the house).
OVERALL: If you are looking to experience Costa Rica in a more rustic way than a typical resort this place was great and I don’t think you could find a better place to unwind. Mark and Lucy were wonderful, the grounds were true nature, and the houses were very comfortable. It was a great break to slip into our trip and I highly recommend it.
