“Need to refocus its attention to details”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My wife and I have been back to this hotel after a few years during a trip in Costa Rica for 10 days.

It is said to see how much did change during the last 3 years, yes I agree and understand that there has been a financial crisis and Tourism business was suffering everywhere. Having said so however one still needs to keep up with what should be seen as minimum 5 star standards if you wish to compete on this level.

As much as we both did praise the hotel and its services 3 years ago, we now need to say it is no longer what it was.

Maintenance and attention to details by Employees is the big issue:

The Air-condition did only work on full speed and lowest temperature
The Jacuzzi was not working at all, water cold
Mini Bar selection way below standard
Water- and other maintenance damage on wood works, main entrance door frame, and walls in bath room, shower and entrance area
Reception area presentation is no longer what it was, things changed and we both did feel said about what we did experience

Overall we must say:
What once made a huge difference in your stay, has now turned the other way; the special service attention to detail and perfectly maintained operation is lost. A lost value, chance and missed opportunity.

“Fabulous Property”

Arenal Kioro is a fabulous property. The setting at the base of the volcano is nothing short of spectacular. The rooms are huge and fabulous, each with their own private hot tub. My only complaint about the rooms, was the quality of the beds. At such a top notch luxury resort I would have expected higher quality beds and linens. The beds were fine, but not great. That being said everything else was great. The location can not be beat, the hot springs are lovely and the restaurant is wonderful. The breakfast was very good and plentiful.

Overall I highly recommend this property. We had a large family outing (16 total) and we all loved the place.

“Very Nice, Skip the Hotel Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here for two nights. Rooms are very nice, all with awesome volcano views and eco-friendly. Grounds are beautifully groomed and the pools and hot springs (natural thermal waters with artificial pools) are lovely. Good service, food at the pool bar/lunch restaurant is tasty and not too expensive, but go into town for dinner. Very generous and included breakfast that is filling and delicious. Tours will pick you up at the hotel, but the taxi ride into town for dinner or wandering around is a bit pricey (~$12-15 each way).

“A great romantic getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We began our Costa Rica vacation with a 3 day stay at this hotel. Though the drive was long (over 5 hours) from San Jose airport, we felt relaxed and rejuvenated as soon as the car entered the driveway of the hotel from the highway. Situated off the main highway, just 3 kms from the Arenal Park entrance, the hotel is set on beautifully landscaped grounds on a hillside with killer views of the volcano. We were greeted by the firendly staff on arrival and given a welcome drink. The check-in was quick and hassle-free (no multiple forms to fill out, etc.). Our luggage was taken to the room while we were driven to our room (about 500 yards from the reception). The room was huge, and had a large jacuzzi. The room (like all rooms at this resort), overlooked the volcano and one could see it while lying in bed, sitting in the jacuzzi or on a chair..
The highlight of the resort, other than the room and the view, were the hot springs, which are a set of 8 cascading pools set on a hillside and surrounded by lush vegetation.
Now let me mention some of the negatives. The resort is far from town, and there is nothing within walking distance. The hotel will call a taxi, which arrives promptly and will drive one to the town of La Fortuna for about $8 in under 10 minutes. The town does have quite a few restaurants, groceries and liquor stores and offers a cheaper alternative to eating and drinking solely at the resort. The other negative is the weather. We were there during the last week of December, but it rained on and off, and the volcano was shrouded in mist and clouds 99% of the time (we got a glimpse on our final morning). The rain is warm though and it is fun and romantic to sit in the hot springs with a glass of wine, while it rains. We got drenched a couple of times a day and loved it. The resort does provide free umbrellas. My only other complaint is that though there are 2 balconies in each room, they are tiny, with barely enough room to stand in.
The breakfast buffet was excellent and dinner was very good though pricey.
We took a pre-booked volcano hike and loved it, though truthfully just being at this beautiful resort is enough, even if one does nothing else. If I went back, I would spend all my time at the resort only.
