I personally wouldn't pick this hotel for a long stay, but after traveling all over Costa Rica, we needed a nice place to rest our heads the night before our flight home and this was a fabulous choice.
It is right across the street from the Costa Rica Zoo (something nice to do for a half day) and close to the airport making it an excellent choice for commuting to and from the airport.
You can tell that at one time, this was a REALLY fancy hotel. It really felt like it was out of another era. But in a really good way. The huge carved doors were beautiful. The rooms were generous, and comfortable but I wouldn't consider them luxury in 2012. Maybe in 1960. Now, that is not to say that the hotel is dated (it isn't), but there was definitely a charming older "vibe" to the entire property. The hotel was dead the night we were there (I think there might have been 2 other people there besides us) but it was nice and quiet in a good way. There's also a pretty garden and lots of birds and lizards on site.
The restaurant overlooked the pool and was very comfortable. The entire vibe of the hotel felt almost European. My only complaint was the lack of Costa Rican dishes - I can get Italian food anywhere! But the dishes were quite good.
Service was good too. The staff was very charming and helpful.
I think this is a good hotel for a night or two before heading off on your vacation to more exotic locations in Costa Rica or for overnight before leaving for the airport in San Jose (about a 15 minute drive). But I wouldn't recommend it for more than a day or two.
