“Excellent Value And Convenient To San Jose Airport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2010

I've stayed previously at Hotel 1915 for two continuous weeks while working with a church group. On a recent return trip, Hotel 1915 was used one night as a convenient location on arrival (before sight seeing at Monte Verde and La Fortuna) and two nights before departure. The hotel is still very convenient to the Airport -- about one mile directly down the street from SJO -- and still offers friendly service for reasonable accomodations. It is certainly not luxurious, and there are no frills, and it doesn't have a doorman or even a portico. But it is very convenient and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Staff speaks fluent Spanish and basic English.

Before my recent visit, I reviewed Trip Advisor Reviews for some of the common complaints, i.e., bars on the windows, the front door is kept locked and the hotel looks old, in order to structure my comments about my planned visit. Specifically, the hotel is older, it is located in Alajuela and the bars on the doors and windows -- none of the windows actually have openings to the exterior -- are consistent with every other building in the city, and, yes, the front door is locked at all times but visitors/guests who ring the convenient door bell are greeted promptly by friendly staff.

I had planned to check out the "Apartments" which are about two hundred yards/meters from the main building and down the street/across a main street. During the time of our visit, it was being used by survivors from a nearby hillside village that had suffered a landslide as a result of the heavy rains while they waited to learn the fate of those who were swept away and I was asked not to go there.

The hotel is clean, the bathrooms are quite small but the water in the shower is hot and the towels are large and fluffy and work well. I was fortunate to stay in Room 8, which is away from the street, and it was relatively quiet. There was heavy rain one night and there was some noise from the downpour. Breakfast -- "tipico" or American and included -- was cheerfully prepared by staff to order! There is a computer with Internet access albeit quite slow and Firefox works best. Staff arranged my taxi pickup for 4 a.m. and we (three of us) were dropped at the SJO airport in less than five minutes. Hotel 1915 is convenient and comfortable but not luxurious!

“Great 1-night stay near airport with one bitter hiccup”

As other reviewers, we chose 1915 based on Lonely Planet guide, on our last night in Costa Rica, due to Alajuela's proximity to the airport. We made a reservation the morning of our arrival day, over the phone, and just left our first name with Adela, without having to give a credit card number. We notified that we would arrive early in the evening. As mentioned in the guide, the building does look like it is closed, but once inside it is absolutely charming. Speaking Spanish definitely helped when dealing with the staff. At arrival, we wanted to pay by card and first we were told that we would be charged more than if paying cash. It was going to be fine since we were trying to avoid getting more colones right before leaving the country. But then, the ladies at the front desk changed the story, saying that the credit card terminal was not working. I am positive it was a lie and it is the only reason why I bumped my rating to 3 stars instead of 4. After parking our car in a safe, private courtyard (be careful, someone from the hotel has to let you in and out), we went into our room (number 9) which was a cozy, comfortable, quiet space (again, be careful, natural light is limited - fine with us since we only needed the place to sleep). Breakfast conveniently started at 5AM so we were able to have a good, tasty meal before an early flight. After reading other reviews, I would like to note that we were given two keys: one for the room and one for the main entrance.

“Ant-infested dump”

Based on Lonely Planet's recommendation, I made a reservation here. My husband and I were put in a house across the street. The unfriendly woman who let me in showed me our room, which had three beds (!), and assured me no one would be in the other bedroom. Good thing since there's only one bathroom. Since it is a house, it has a living area, kitchen, an empty laundry room, etc -- much too big for two people. The paint on the walls is dirty, the bathroom has a funky odor, and there were ants crawling all over the place -- and no Internet. Went to the "main building" for breakfast and found it to be quite charming. Bottom line: if you go, don't get stuck across the street. Also, be aware that there are bars and gates everywhere; not very inviting, and the hotel sign is hard to see. And, you have to ring the bell to be let in and out of the main hotel, which is inconvenient.

“Good place for a night or two”

I stayed here the first and last nights of my Costa Rican vacation. The hotel is clean, the breakfast is great (you have your choice of Costa Rican breakfast or a more American style breakfast w/eggs) and the proximity to the airport is convenient. They have a parking lot across the street for your car if you have one. The hotel is clean as was the room. The decor is quite nice as well and overall the stay was a good one. Nothing fancy, but it definitely fit our needs.

“Fantastic Stay - Really nice people!!”

We stayed for 3 nights in Alajuela, in Hotel 1915, and that was by far one of the best hotels we've been into during our trip 3 weeks trip! Rooms were perfect for our needs, two double beds, A-C if required, Big TV, private bathroom and shower. The hotel interio is perfect for relaxing and hanging a little. You have to see this!

The owner is very accomadating, as well as the whole staff, and especially Jerome, the guy working for Bio Tours. Awesome guy! (Hola Amigo!). Have something organized with him, whether it's Poas Volcano, La Paz or something else you may want to do around, ask Jerome!! You won't regret it.

And it's the perfect place to stay if you have to leave the country because it's so close tpo the airport (from 6 to 7$ in taxi!!).

Ben
