“Weekend away from kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

We stayed at this hotel for a short weekend for a break away from the kiddos. The deluxe room was nice and spacious enough for two adults not to fall over each other. Really did not like the pillows though, they were too soft if you use one, but if you stack two up, you get a neck ache, The look and feel of the corridor was elegant with nice walls decorated with plant paintings.

We tried the Chinese restaurant on the ground floor (leased out to outside party), food was good and reasonable but they only served Chinese wines, But the staff were helpful in offering the Wine list from the Lobby Lounge as an alternative,

We also popped by the Lobby Lounge for the Happy Hours where beers were 1 for 1 and cocktails at half price. Good deal but when we enquired about the complimentary pass around canapes that were being promoted, we were offered a bowl of peanuts!! Then the staff replied that they did not offer the canapes...so why advertise?

Location was very convenient, just next to the Lifehub at Daning so lots of shops to browse through, a cinema (unfortunately only Chinese movies), more cafes and food outlets and also walking distance to Metro line 1.

The pool was pretty decent too, you get natural daylight which is nice. We did not try it this time round so can;t comment on the water temperature.

All in all, a pretty decent hotel for a short stay.

I was here on a business trip with colleagues. The location is out of the way, but near a metro station. There is a pedestrian mall here with lots of restaurant alternatives.

Location is near metro, shopping and various places to eat. Rooms were clean, comfortable and very quiet. Staff was efficient and helpful. Only ate at breakfast at the hotel. It was good with a lot of variety.

Will stay here the next time I come to Shanghai.

Room is very good, big, and comfortable, view is very good to the city's business district - lots of shops/restaurants close by - breakfast range is very wide, but very-very crowded

“Good, but gone downhill in the last year.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

I reviewed this hotel in September 2008. We happily stay here every year for business (and have done for nearly 8 years). Unfortunately, this stay was below our previous experiences. We stayed seven nights, and although upgraded to a very large suite (also Club members) there were little things that disappointed. Maintenance - a typical issue in China - seems to be a problem and now the hotel or rooms obviously requires a little maintenance we found it was often lacking, or was done shoddily. Plus little things like tea bags - where you always got 'English tea' in the room, there is now only Chinese tea. When I called guest services to ask for the usual Lipton tea bags (thinking the cleaner had forgotten it) they said "no, we don't supply English tea any more - if you want that you have to order room service". Really, how much do a couple of tea bags cost to supply when so many Westerners stay there? Simple enough, we bought our own, but it was things like this, including the standard of room cleanliness (maybe we just had an incompetent cleaner on our floor?!), which we found had dropped a little & that disappointed - and we have past years to compare.

Additionally, while the breakfasts are still good, we twice went to eat dinner in the restaurant, the 2nd time taking business colleagues with us. Both times, we ordered off the menu, order taken, only to be told afterwards MOST of what we had ordered was not available (why take the order in the first place?!). The first time we made another choice (with few options) but the 2nd time we left the restaurant as there are plenty of others nearby. We were told "the fridges were not working" (i.e. maintenance?) so many items on the menu were not available.

We three times went for happy hour drinks in the bar. Service was dreadful - 3rd occasion we had our work colleagues with us - the bar had run out of common old Jonnie Walker Scotch a few nights previously and still - no JW?! I mean there is a grocery store next door that sells it - go out and get some! A champagne cocktail was warm and flat which we returned, only to get another half an hour later, fizzy but still warm (those fridges!!). Often, the staff stood chatting and giggling at their phones behind the bar and did not look to see if anyone required any service, to the point people had to approach them for service. Worst still, they were washing the used glasses and crockery under a cool running tap, giving it a cursory swish around, then drying it and putting it away for reuse. This is very unhygienic and not the standards expected of a Sheraton.
I have still rated this hotel as very good (it's better than 'average' but it wasn't 'very good') as the concierge and reception staff are always, and remain, very helpful, and of course the location is good with everything you would want immediately outside the hotel. Metro is a block away, very easy to get around. We were just disappointed at the dropping standards of this hotel - to the point where we may reconsider where we stay next year.
