I reviewed this hotel in September 2008. We happily stay here every year for business (and have done for nearly 8 years). Unfortunately, this stay was below our previous experiences. We stayed seven nights, and although upgraded to a very large suite (also Club members) there were little things that disappointed. Maintenance - a typical issue in China - seems to be a problem and now the hotel or rooms obviously requires a little maintenance we found it was often lacking, or was done shoddily. Plus little things like tea bags - where you always got 'English tea' in the room, there is now only Chinese tea. When I called guest services to ask for the usual Lipton tea bags (thinking the cleaner had forgotten it) they said "no, we don't supply English tea any more - if you want that you have to order room service". Really, how much do a couple of tea bags cost to supply when so many Westerners stay there? Simple enough, we bought our own, but it was things like this, including the standard of room cleanliness (maybe we just had an incompetent cleaner on our floor?!), which we found had dropped a little & that disappointed - and we have past years to compare.
Additionally, while the breakfasts are still good, we twice went to eat dinner in the restaurant, the 2nd time taking business colleagues with us. Both times, we ordered off the menu, order taken, only to be told afterwards MOST of what we had ordered was not available (why take the order in the first place?!). The first time we made another choice (with few options) but the 2nd time we left the restaurant as there are plenty of others nearby. We were told "the fridges were not working" (i.e. maintenance?) so many items on the menu were not available.
We three times went for happy hour drinks in the bar. Service was dreadful - 3rd occasion we had our work colleagues with us - the bar had run out of common old Jonnie Walker Scotch a few nights previously and still - no JW?! I mean there is a grocery store next door that sells it - go out and get some! A champagne cocktail was warm and flat which we returned, only to get another half an hour later, fizzy but still warm (those fridges!!). Often, the staff stood chatting and giggling at their phones behind the bar and did not look to see if anyone required any service, to the point people had to approach them for service. Worst still, they were washing the used glasses and crockery under a cool running tap, giving it a cursory swish around, then drying it and putting it away for reuse. This is very unhygienic and not the standards expected of a Sheraton.
I have still rated this hotel as very good (it's better than 'average' but it wasn't 'very good') as the concierge and reception staff are always, and remain, very helpful, and of course the location is good with everything you would want immediately outside the hotel. Metro is a block away, very easy to get around. We were just disappointed at the dropping standards of this hotel - to the point where we may reconsider where we stay next year.
