“Great location with poor service”

We stayed at this hotel Dec 24 to 27 . The hotel is on the 2nd floor of a department store. The receptionists are wearing yellow smiley badges on their uniforms but they never smile and I mean all of them (whether the morning staff or the night staff). A good point would be, they let us check in early because we arrived at 830 am. We stayed at the superior room which has an average size with carpet stains. The room was clean with small ref, kettle and tv. The bathroom was clean enough but some of the towels have holes in them. We chose this hotel because of the location and free wifi. On our first day the receptionist said that their wifi was under repair. On the second day , the receptionist said they had no wifi apparently annoyed by guests constantly asking for it. On our second day, the elevator broke down. We asked the receptionist to do something about it, since we were staying at the 5th floor. Again , they gave us the poker face or ~I don`t care look. Breakfast was not included so I can`t comment on their food. The location of this hotel is its saving grace. There is a Starbucks in front of the hotel, a McDonald`s and KFC on each side. There are 2 MRT stations within 5 min walk. - the People`s square and East Nanjing Station. Madame Tussaud`s and Shanghai Museum are all within walking distance. Yuyuan garden is one station away. The bund is a 15 to 20 minute walk. There are many shops around but a bit too pricey for me. There cheap shops around Yuyuan garden. There are other hotels within the area with same category. Next time, I`ll try them, maybe they have better service

“Great location!!”

It's all about the location! This hotel is right on the infamous Nanjing East Road pedestrian street, where all the shoppings and food and people are centred. It's close to the metro station (People's square), and about 20 mins walk to the Bund, where you can see the Oriental Pearl Tower and other buildings around it. The price for the rooms are excellent, compared to other hotels in the area, or not in the area. It's a 2-star hotel, but I think it's good for anyone who's on a budget and not hoping for anything luxurious. The shops are just outside the lift on the ground floor (lobby is on the 1st, or 2nd in China). You can get a map of Shanghai just next to the lift, where they sell tobacco. Rooms are standard here, but if possible, ask for a room where there is a view of the nanjing east road.

“WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

All this place has going for it is its great location. There are great eating and shopping areas around here, though they are over-priced because there are lots of tourists here.

That's it for positives. With that said, I still cannot recommend this hotel to anyone, especially if you are bringing young children with you. My buddy and I stayed here for 4 nights. I couldn't believe the previous posts about rude employees, but now I truly know.

Although we spoke Chinese, we found the employee in the hotel to be quite rude, as he made snide remarks when he didn't understand us. In the process of registering, he copied our passports. It's odd because we came back down later that night to ask if we could copy our passports and another employee told us that there was no copy machine. When asked where we could get access to a copy machine, they told us to go look in another hotel. WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS DOES THAT? 3 out of 4 employees at this hotel treated us the same way. When asked a question they will tell you they don't know or give you some obscure advice and then begin resuming their work as if you didn't have any more questions or needed clarifying.

The worst part of this hotel is that it is damp and there is MOLD! On the first night, I developed something similar to a cold as soon as we entered the room. I couldn't sleep for any of the 4 nights I stayed here. I am wearing a surgical mask right now as I am typing this in the hotel. Thank goodness it's already morning and we're checking out in a few hours! Combine this with a hotel policy that permits smoking in rooms, I would say do not take loved ones or children who have asthma here because they will have respiratory problems throughout your stay. On this last night, I also got bitten by some kind of insect or mosquito, so I must admit this place really takes the cake.

Also the view. Let me tell you about this spectacular view. Our view overlooked pipes and the other side of the building. The building wraps around itself so you can see directly across into the other room next to you . If you're into pipes and obstructed views, this is the hotel for you. As if the mold didn't get to me - the view here is so limited that you cannot even tell what the weather is outside until you are actually outside. If you based it on what you saw from this view, you'd probably think that Shanghai is a really rainy city.

We're opting out for a more expensive place near Yuyuan gardens on our return leg. Do yourself and your family a favor and DO NOT STAY HERE.

“Pleasant hotel in amazing location for Shanghai central”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

First of all, as far as I'm aware this hotel is now just referred to as East Asia Hotel, as all the adverts for it on Nanjing Road refer to it as such. As imaginable on Nanjing Road, this place is in an absolutely fantastic location - a 10 minute walk to the Bund and pretty central on Nanjing Road itself. People's Sq station is probably the nearer of the two (the other being East Nanjing Rd) for the metro but both are fairly close - another big plus.

The staff were a bit abrupt, but at the end of the day they did their job when needed - it was a little ironic that they were all wearing smiley face badges - particularly after we'd read some of the reviews on Trip Advisor! They did however let us check in early, which was a big plus as we'd just arrived from a pretty bad nights sleep on a train.

The room was clean, comfortable and an OK size. The only downside was that it was a bit noisy at night - the walls were rather thin.

For the money, this hotel is great value in a city where things are slowly getting more expensive (especially with the Expo being on at the time of writing). The location alone makes it a very good choice indeed.

“Worst service ever!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2010

The hotel is in a fantastic location - right in the heart of Shanghai. Unfortunately that's where anything good about this hotel ends. The reception staff were the rudest staff I have ever come across. We booked and pre-paid our room on line so we checked in quite easily. But I did have the pen snatched out of my hand while I was signing our papers to check in. We were also yelled at by staff to leave reception saying "You finish - go now!!"
However, our friends also booked their room online but didn't pre-pay. The reception staff tried to tell them they booked two rooms and they must pay for two rooms. There was a lot of yelling from the staff. I couldn't believe it. Later when I went down to ask for a hairdryer it was like asking for the receptionists life - she was so rude and almost threw the hairdryer at me while snatching a 100 Yuan deposit out of my hand.

Despite paying for the better room - we still didn't get a room with a window. The beds are hard and horrible. All I can say is that management should get new staff if they want people to keep going to this hotel. However, I think because they know they have a good location they won't change...very disappointed.
