“Good choice”

We stayed here for a week's vacation, wanting to be centrally located. It was a good choice: walking distance from the Bund, from People's Square and from YuYuan Gardens. A few minutes' walk to East Nanjing Lu metro station (or to Nanjing Lu itself): so, a great location. Breakfasts OK, with good views (on top floor). Staff were friendly, but we didn't really seek much advice from them as tourists. [They were helpful when we did.] Room was spacious and comfortable, and there was a space-age shower and spa-bath (without jets); good Internet service in room. It was terrific base for a lovely week in this great city. Lots of eateries near the hotel (inexpensive ones) and very many convenience stores (including one over the road) for cheap beers, etc.

Room Tip: Bund view was good. Pearl Tower from 17th floor was spectacular.

“Shanghai Santa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We stayed here over Christmas this past December. It's really in a good location for touring (walking) around central Shanghai. Most everything you might want to see is within a good 15-ish minute walk. The Bund/riverwalk, Nanjing Rd, People's Square, Yuyuan Gardens and park. We walked all over the place and saw, experienced and enjoyed so much. The Salvo itself is a well kept older hotel with some great views available. Our room was large and quiet with a separate living/sitting room. 2 tv's, fridge, desk w/pc, and great views toward The Bund. Buffet breakfast was ok. Staff was friendly and efficient. Especially the young man at the concierge/bell desk. He was always working and extremely helpful and accommodating. Good value and would stay again.

Room Tip: book an executive room

“Little Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I stayed at the Salvo Hotel at the end of my business trip so I could spend one free night in Shanghai before I went home. What a great hotel. I stayed in a business executive suite and the room was massive. I was very comfortable and had a great view of the Bund from the 26th floor. Overall the position is the best part a short walk to the Nanjing Street shops and a little bit further to the bund. The only disappointing thing was the breakfast buffet it was not very good with a poor choice of Western food. Pity I only spent one night there.

“Not 4 star by Western Standards”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

I booked this hotel off Tripadvisor comments. the price was reasonable for China prices but considering the average wage is $1000 per month YEEKS the Hotels rip us off!

Unfortunately, a 4 star this is not. there IS NOTHING in the foyer to assist holiday makers or any information for travellers. many of the staff struggle with english which whether we like it or not IS the international language and if China markets itself to travel, they must also wake up.

The rooms were NOT very well cleaned and things were damaged because of poor qulaity. Typical cheap products I am afraid. there is also not much to do in Shanghai as the lights go off all the building around 11pm and the streets are EMPTy 9quite amazing really) after midnight.

24million people? Where do they go at night?

After you do the red bus tour which is very good and reasonably priced at 30 yuan ($6.00) there is not much else to do. the BUND/ well that is an area and a little walk to see some buildings OUTSIDE and the what??? A walk down Nanjing road shops everywhere at prices way above what i can get the same at home for then what? well there are only so many LUCKY LUCKY cats waving their arms and so many clothes a person needs and then what?

the french Concession? well shame it is all gone to high buildings and modernisation.

The best part of shanghai apart from the airport was Shanghai Movie wolrd with a replica of old streets and THAT WA GREAT.

the Hotel needs to improve its services to travellers. the staff need to know that smile is OK too.

Room Tip: Book through Orbitz and get a special book in service with Breakfasts included and Better rooms

“reasonable value for room size and good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Pro: got the Bund-River view (from the 21st floor) which I asked for -the city view you get from the breakfast room on the 31st floor. There is also a sitting room with the Bund-River view (with wifi-otherwsie only in lobby?) on the same floor. Room itself (business suite?) very spacious with separate sittingroom with a TV in each (but not LCD)- how often do you get a 53 m² hotel room for this price? The distinctive lit top of the hotel (very similar to the Westin in front) was invaluable at night to locate when I was walking down from the metro from the airport (hotel about 4 blocks directly south from the Nanjing East stop). It's an easy walk (less than 10mins) to the Bund but also only 12-15mins to People's Square so not worth getting the metro. In fact I walked everywhere other than longer trips on the metro as even Old Town and HuaiHai Zhong Lu are close enough (and metro stations not close enough). Overall very comfortable however for 3 nights, even though I halved the price and moved closer to the Bund in a Chinese hotel for another 3 nights in Shanghai. [Bizarrely cheaper to book online in both cases than hotel directly!

Con: breakfast was OK but not stellar, better to stick with dim sums etc than Western in my view. LAN only in room, no WiFi, which is also relatively slow (common to all other Chinese hotels (Suzhou-Nanjing) I stayed in on this 12 day trip) - and thanks to monitoring you can forget Facebook and Wikipedia!

Room Tip: ask for a Bund-river side view on a higher floor
