“Enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

I was dismayed when we first pulled up to the hotel and saw that it was next to a highway overpass, and it seemed to be an industrial area. The lobby was very noisy with music from the bar and a waterfall. We couldn't hardly speak with our guide. However, once beyond that, we had a great hamburger in the lobby deli - our only American meal in 25 days, and it was quite delicious. They offer an extensive and delicious breakfast with a wide range of choice. Ask for extra padding when you check in and the beds will be fine. The metro is conveniently outside the door and we had ready access to the entire city. Our room faced the Indoor stadium and it was entertaining with the big screen video of sports, the morning tai chi in the plaza, and the views of part of the city. It may have been fun to stay closer into the city, perhaps the Xiantandi section, but I don't know how the costs and quality would compare. With the metro, everything was easily accessible.

“Rooms Desperately Need Renovation, Carpeting Stained, Hard Beds-Changed Rooms Three Times”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

I booked Superior Tower rooms for myself and several of my customers. I was grossed out by the first room because the carpeting was filthy, stained and worn, the AC did not work well, the bed was hard as a sheet of plywood, all furniture showed signs of severe wear and tear. No Flat panel tv's - decor vintage 70's style. I asked to be moved to a better room because I was very uncomfortable with the state of the room - it was actually depressing. The bathroom in the first room was also outdated and moldy, in the second room, the bathroom was actually clean and pleasant but overall, the "new" room still suffered from severe wear and tear and was also outdated.
In spite of this, the hotel staff in the Tower were extremely professional, courteous, and eager to help me to be comfortable but were limited by the overall state of dis-repair of the hotel. I was embarassed because I was trying to make sure my customers were staying in the best place possible and this hotel is rated 5 stars!?! Very mis-leading rating. One of the previous reviewers is correct, the best thing about this hotel is the lobby-staff excluded-because again, I think they were gracious and did the best they could with what they have to work with.

“Worst 5 star hotel I've ever stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

I booked this hotel because it was one of the official hotels of Shanghai Expo 2010 and it was the assigned hotel by a local travel agent in Los Angeles.

"5 star hotel, Shanghai, World Expo" should not be too bad, right? I was totally wrong.

When I arrived at the hotel, there was no door man, no bell hop. We had to carry all luggage by ourselves and reached the reception area. There were two receptionist handling check-in process. Obviously there was some technical technical problem, so both of them were helping the same customers. We stayed there for 5-10 minutes patiently. What looked weird was the duty manager. A dumb guy standing, looked at the roof, looked at line and then looked at the carpet, not even tried to help or said hello to the customers in line. Hard to image such a dumb guy could be the manager on duty.

Eventually, I got the key and entered the hotel room. Crap, hard to believe, there were stains everywhere on the carpet, just like the carpet in those low grade restaurants. Bathroom was small. The window curtain was dusty.

Food was fair.

One more trouble we had was the house keeping. One morning, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. Because I had some medical stuff and I don't want house keeper to touch it, I put the "Do not disturb" sign before I went downstair. When I came back from breakfast, the house keeper was cleaning the room!! I said why you came in the room when I put the sign there. The lady didn't answer. Instead, she said, "I am almost done. I just need to vacuum the carpet. You can stay in the room while I am cleaning. It won't bother me." I said, "Can you come back and vacuum the room after we leave the room.?" She said, "No. I am done. I won't come back again today." Can you believe it?

Anyway, enough complains. Only thing I can say is this is the worst 5 star hotel I've ever stayed. I think this is a 3 star hotel at best.

“Great location & 5 star hotel at an affordable price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

Hua Ting is a big 5 star hotel with a big grand lobby. Although it is a bit old, it is still well maintained, clean and very secure. I like the bed it was very soft, and the amenities in the room are complete (mini bar, safety box, etc. although internet was not free) & the rooms are spacious. Despite it is bustling at the lobby with guests, it is very quiet in the room. Best of all, it is located just next to the subway (Line 1, Shanghai Indoor Stadium, Exit 7), and line 1 takes you to most of the top sites in Shanghai! There are convenience stores and restaurants around the area, but I usually just take the subway and go to the tourist areas. I booked it a very good discount at Agora with 1 day free Expo ticket and shuttle bus! It also provided a free shuttle van on my way back to the airport (Hongziao only though, which is 15-20 mins. away). Breakfast buffet though is expensive, typical 5 star rates, so I didn't have them, but I had ala carte in another restaurant inside which was very good. It also has an ice maker in the hallway, which was great to make ice coffee drinks in the room after a hot day outside. It also has Clark Hatch fitness, although it was very basic and not upto my expectation of a Clark Hatch. They also provide money exchange with no service fees, so change your money here rather than at the airport where there is service fee (exchange rates are same all over China even in hotels). The concierge also helped me with booking tickets to Era Acrobatic show with small fee. English is also well understood by many staff, and staff are generally friendly and helpful. It was a great choice! I highly recommend!

“Overrated - but right at a Metro stop.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2010

I booked this hotel because it was the official hotel of the Expo 2010. While it wasn't near any of the most visited sites, it is right on the Metro, Shanghai Indoor Stadium stop (use exit 7). I stayed on the executive floor, but it wasn't worth it, no real perks and the service was indifferent. The hotel is nice enough, clean, expensive on-site restaurants. You can do better,
