“Very nice 'quality hotel'. I have stayed here 5 times”
I used this hotel when on business in Shanghai. Our business interest is 40 km to the South of Shangai so the location of this hotel is ideal - easy access to City Centre attractions but on the right side of town to make the journey to our business interest less than one hour.
I have stayed in both the premium rooms on the top three floors (the last time was in 2008) but on my most recent trip I was in a standard room on the 14th floor. My 'standard room' was quite spacious with a large flat screen TV in front of the large comfortable bed. It had a desk which I could work at with power sockets taking British and European plugs. Whilst WIFI is available I could not connect from my rooms so i used the cable provided next to the desk. The connection was charged on the basis of time spent up to a max charge of about EUR6.80 per 24 hours. It worked well. If you are having a drink in the bar they give you the access code for the WIFI free of charge so there is an alternative to paying in your room.
The wardrobe was small and I could barely accomodate the clothes I had taken for a four day trip but there is a complimentary safe. The bathroom was also quite small and suitable for one person at a time. However it was clean, the shower worked well and they do provide some bathroom scales which is a novelty. A good selection of complimentary toiletries is provided along with two 330ml bottles of water for cleaning your teeth (best not to drink the tap water)
There is a gym on the 3rd floor which I did use once. There is a water dispenser which is good but no sanitary wipes which mean the equipment doesn't feel clean, this was the reason why I only went in there one time. This ought to be corrected. The bikes, treadmills and cross trainers have TV screens on front of them with a connection for personal headphones which is a nice touch. The hotel was built in the 1990s so they (TVs) are a bit tatty but work OK.
We used the business centre which has two small meeting rooms but they were very small and did not cope well with the smaller of our meetings (five people) Larger rooms are available for 'conferences' but we needed a room capable of seating eight people in comfort for one of our meetings and there were no such rooms available. We did not want to pay for a room capable of holding >50 people.
There are about 8 lifts which means you only ever have to wait a few seconds. However things do get crowded at 'rush hour' (between 8 and 9am). The glass lift overlooking the stadium is a nice touch
This is a large hotel so reception is huge and has a nice atmosphere. The bar and restaurant are to the left as you enter the hotel and whilst I did not eat an evening meal in the restaurant, the breakfast selection was excellent and the food served at breakfast was very good.
On the subject of cleanliness there was a slight musty smell on the 14th floor which carried over into my room. Not sure whether this reflects the age of the hotel or the legacy of a previous water leak that had not been dried out properly. In spite of the slight smell, my room was very clean, comfortable and quiet and overall, the hotel is clean and tidy.
There is a subway station right outside so taking the 'tube' into the city centre is very convenient. There are also plenty of taxis.
One thing that does need to be addressed is the fact that two of my colleagues were propositioned by a couple of 'ladies' late one evening near the lifts. This never happened during previous visits and I hope that the hotel become more vigilant in keeping these 'ladies' where they belong - off the hotel premises.
My room overlooked the back of the hotel which is not very interesting. On previous visits I have stayed in rooms overlooking the stadium and this enables you to watch the hustle and bustle. Go for one of these rooms if you can.
If your budget allows, stay in an executive room on the top three floors. These are nicer and there is an executive lounge where you can take breakfast and complimentary 'snacks' late in the afternoon. (or at least this was the case when I last used this service in Nov 2008)
The old railway station (now a restaurant) which is 10 minutes walk up the road and is a great place for a meal.
Pearl City shopping centre is 10 minutes taxi ride from the hotel
Room Tip: Try and get a room overlooking the front of the hotel with views of the Stadium. The rooms at the r...
