Located just one block from Huahailu, the popular district of Shanghai, the location is exceptional in an enclosed gated garden area. Though taxis are plentiful and inexpensive, two nearby subway lines just blocks away makes it even more convenient. Besides many name brand shops & restaurants, McDonalds is just around the corner, as well as, their inexpensive room service which offers a good variety of western & Chinese cuisine. The exterior of the building is very retro, but inside, the rooms looks to have been recently renovated with updated marble bathrooms. All amenities were included, such as: bathrobes, toiletries, slippers, temperature controlled air/heat, mini bar, etc. They should include the internet service in the price of the room and I would suggest that the hotel upgrade their televisions to flat panel LCDs to make the rooms look more spacious. The business center staff were not the best, but the helpful concierge made up for it with their attentive service. I would definitely choose this hotel again. It is a 5 star hotel, owned by one of the largest Chinese chains so you really can't go wrong.

Good location, spacious room (deluxe), quiet for a good night's sleep. The toiletry could use a little upgrade though. The gym is quite decent (size and machine-wise), and not crowded during my stay. The pool looked nice.

The only quibble I had is no wi-fi in rooms. Even in the lobby, you have to pay to have access. Which seems a bit behind the times as most comparable hotels now offer free wifi in rooms.

I stayed here for a couple of night early in December 2011 on a business trip.
The hotel has several buildings independent each other, as many chinese hotels are.

It's one of the oldest hotel in Shanghai, the first building seems to have been built in the '30s. they say it hosted more than 500 foreign Presidents during their visit in Shanghai!.

The hotel is clean ,fairly basic but nice, service very good, staff very kind.

Rooms are spacious and clean, very well maintaned and renewd recently. Some detail lacks of attention.

Food is fair as well as breackfast. Pricing is good compared to the service and rooms quality.

Location is very good although a bit far from the Bund, but it's OK.

It's worth to be considered for staying in Shanghai, I suggest it

Stayed two nights for business trip. Selected this hotel over Garden Hotel which is across the road and cost twice as much. Having viewed both I couldn't see much difference. The hotel is located in what appears to be a historic building, so the general environment is classic not modern - however very clean and the room I used appeared recently renovated. The room (in Cathay Building) was large and spacious with comfortable bed and nicely decorated. Breakfast was okay. General staff service acceptable not great. Ordered room service once which was good and reasonably priced. The hotel complex has several restaurants, including a decent Indian, so if you want to stay in there are plenty of options. The area itself is 20minutes from the Bund but very pleasant with tree lined boulevards and lots of shopping.
