“Great, but odd, location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

The first thing that strikes one about the Regal Shanghai East Asia is its very unusual location. The second thing that strikes you is that your taxi driver will have no idea where the hotel is and once you've told the driver where it is they'll have no idea how to get there because of the maze of small streets that lead to the entrance. Yes, like the Toronto Skydome, it's a hotel inside of stadium with rooms that look out onto the field. Like many stadiums, the roads aren't designed to drop people off right next to it. This location inside of the stadium has both advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage is that it's got two metro stops right by it. Excellent access to public transportation is a big plus for me and made our trip much easier. The disadvantage is that you're in a stadium. It's a little strange.

Check in was pretty quick and easy. It's a little disconcerting having to go through the metal detector to enter the lobby, however. What was even more disconcerting is how often they told us just to walk around the thing. At check in we were offered an upgrade. Great! Well, if the room was an upgrade I'd hate to see what a normal room was. Not only was the room much smaller than the size of the room I had booked and quite dirty, but rather than one king size bed it had two beds that were marginally larger than a twin. I asked down at the front desk about this and they said that they didn't have any king size rooms left -- so really what I got wasn't an upgrade at all. Furthermore, the windows to the outside world didn't seal tight, this had the double problem of letting in those nasty little biting gnats that are endemic to Shanghai and also made it so we could hear the music of people doing their 6am exercises in the public square outside the window.

However, we could have done worse. Aside from the issue with the room, the staff was great and was able to get us taxis when we needed them and provided directions for the best way to take the metro to our locations. It was also a decent price at an expensive time to visit Shanghai (near the end of the World Expo).

In short, it's not that I'd say "don't stay at this hotel", more like "well, here's a lower bar for your expectations. If you don't want to gamble or pay a lot, it's not a bad place to stay."

“Nice Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2010

I was part of a Tour group to China which booked this hotel for our stay in Shanghai. The weekend we were there, the event center next to the hotel had some sort of fair that started early that Saturday. From the room we were in, you could hear the music blairing. The accomodation was okay. Room was small with very little walking space with two twin beds. Room was clean but just felt crampy but I'm sure it was the standard room they had.
Breakfast served both American and Asian dishes. Lots of business people were staying there along with tour groups which made it seem hectic. The breakfast buffet wasn't all that great. From a scale of 1-10, i give it a 7, decent but nothing worth writing.
Location is far from the Metro and not close to the tourist attractions like the Bund,Pearl Tower, etc.
Taking taxi back took a while because of traffic and a concert that night in the building. Staff were friendly and were able to communicate in English. Tried their Chinese restaurant that night which we were the only ones eating. Food was okay but they ran out of the seasonal crab which was popular at that time.

“Very impressed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2010

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a 2 week tour of China. The hotel is very impressive inside and out. Check in was quick, we were allocated a very small but nicely furnished room. Decided to go for a swim and on looking for the pool we asked a member of staff near reception for details, he asked if we were happy with everything and i commented that the room and bed were smaller than we had expected and he offered to upgrade us to a city view room on the premiere floor! Excellent service and i hope that the hotel check this website for reviews because i want to say a very big thank you. The room was wonderful and if you are considering staying at this hotel i would definitely recommend these rooms - the stadium view rooms are very good but much smaller than the city view rooms.
Convenient location near 2 metro stations, breakfast and bar service excellent. The happy hour at the bar on the 12th floor (wonderful views of the flood lit stadium) has a few stipulations and does not include all drinks. We were not allowed to "share" our drinks and had to order individually (so would end up with 4 drinks) as we were ordering beer (we did not want 2 drinks on our table going warm and flat) the waitress agreed to bring them after we had finished our first round. This seems a bit silly to me after all it is the customer's choice after buying a drink if they decide to give their partner the "free" one so perhaps this is something the hotel can look in to. However a minor niggle for a very impressive hotel

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

Not many positive things to say really......staff don't smile, average breakfast, old rooms, poor sleep quality, noisy, taxis not easily available due to the location, slow Internet etc. Overall, a poor experience.

“Good location to access South Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

We stayed in a Premier room in this hotel, which is built into the Shanghai Stadium, and had to pass through a metal detector and X-ray machine at the security checkpoint of the hotel every time we entered. Odd but understandable, I guess.

The room was spacious, with plenty of seating. It was clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed looking out the window and watching the qigong practice every morning. There were multiple restaurants in the hotel, but we usually went to the convenience stores and bakery across the street. There is also a small grocery store with fresh fruit, snacks, etc. as well.

The Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center was very close to the hotel, and the nearest metro stop for the Shanghai Indoor Stadium is less than a five minute walk. There is also a small mall at the street intersection of the metro stop, and restaurants on Caoxi Rd.
