“Great hotel, efficient staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I stayed at the hotel for a conference and really enjoyed the stay. The hotel is situated on the river, with views (if you've got a room on that side of the hotel), over the river towards the Bund (waterfront). The hotel collected me, at additional cost, from the Hongqiao airport. Roughly 20-25 minutes later I was at the hotel. Check in was efficient and friendly.

The room was spotless, spacious and quiet. I was particularly impressed with the clearly labelled lighting. There is a wide choice of restaurants, with both western and chinese cuisine. Breakfast is served at the ground floor River Cafe, which had a fantastic buffet. I also ate at the Italian restaurant which I though to be excellent. The view from the 30th floor Red Passion bar is spectacular, especially at night.

The concierge was very helpful in tracking down with the airline my missing luggage as well as organising a tour of the city. I was a little surprised when told that the tour company only accepted payment in cash, so plan accordingly. There is an ATM in the hotel lobby area where you can draw local currency.

As far as location is concerned, Shanghai strikes me as such a sprawling city that wherever you stay that you're never in the centre of anything, so I was happy with the location. There is quite a nice shopping mall within easy walking distance.

When I return to Shanghai I will stay here again.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a river view

“Good, business hotel on the Pudong side”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Slightly better than standard, business hotel. The area is not exciting but it is not far from an OK mall and a 5 minute walk from the underground train line that can take you across to the Bund side, Nanjing Rd etc.

Comfortable beds, some good views, great staff and pretty good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a river facing room, corner room.

“Don't Bother!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I was booked in here for a conference. Apart from being in Pudong, which is I found a hassle because most of my meetings were the other side of the river, this hotel is tired and second-rate. There is really nothing to be said in its favour - apart from the view. And the Maglev is marginally easier to reach. And taxis or rather lack of them during busy times is reason enough to stay somewhere else....

“Gran is GRAND!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed for two days and was blown away!!! Ideally located for business travellers or tourists, Gran Melia is in the middle of the Pudong Futuristic Business District and next to the Marine park and the CN TV Tower. The Lobby is Grand to say the least with a plush and beautiful Medley of Crystal and Granite. The staff was gracious enough to upgrade me from City View to River View Room and certainly the view of river Pu was amazing. The Room was plush... After having stayed in not so large rooms in Luxury hotels of Hong Kong and Singapore, my expectations were greatly lowered. At Gran Melia, my expectations of Luxury were restored. The Bathroom (all paraphernalia included) was as big as a hotel room in Singapore!!! The Room was clean and inviting and put me to and extra hour of sleep due to its cozyness. The Swimming Pool in the top floor was warm and inviting even at an outside temperature of 5 degree C and offered a spectacular view.

Room Tip: Both River View and City View are good. There is a building being constructed on the south side. The...

“medium well ....”

I stayed in this hotel for a convention (2 nights). While the hotel presents correctly, they certainly have a long way to go to match luxury hotels. Useless to try to get your breakfast at 6 am (as they promiss) - it will be ready at 6.45 am (with jet lag that becomes a long time). Rooms nice and clean, yet internet not yet ready on wifi (only cable - useless for ipad etc). In general an ok hotel (a little bit away from the main center).
