I literally stumbled upon Walu while on a group hike from a neighboring backpacker type "resort." I swiftly moved over to Walu upon learning that the price was more or less similar as it included all meals and…a private bure vs. a dingy room and shared facilities that were scary.
The staff was unbelievably friendly. But I was there in July and I had the distinct impression that Walu was a resort in transition. I believe there was a new owner who was in the process of reforming the camp.
As far as settings go – beautiful. Grounds were clean and well-manicured. Private Bures were really cute.
I would have given it a higher rank, but there were some issues that stuck out for me. First, the door of my bure, which was dreamy, did not lock. And I heard a woman complaining of the same thing, so I know I wan't the only one. Second, the bure had a thatched roof, which was charming to look at – really fit the Sth Pacific fantasy. Unfortunately, it was apparently inhabited by something, which was very active at night. Both not huge issues for me really, but could be unsettling for some. The bigger issue for me was the meal service. Meals were carefully (overly) planned and scheduled. I found them quite basic, with LOTS of starches – one night three types of pasta - and very light on protein. You also did not serve yourself, it was carefully doled out by staff, so if you really were hungry and wanted to pig out, it was a bit awkward to get that extra (little) piece of fish or chicken. I would have gladly paid a little more money for better food and a little more of it - if I wanted it.
Again, this was back in July and there was a new owner or manager on site. So, perhaps some of these issues were addressed. Really, it is a great value, staffed by accommodating people. A few locks, an exterminator, and more and better quality food (with higher prices understandably) would bring it up to a Very Good.
