Great, friendly service, good food and accomodating for special requests.
The room was large and airy with nicely decorated Fijian theme.
The location is absolutely idylic for a relaxing holiday, a beautiful sandy beach out the front with nearby coral reefs for snorkeling. Plenty of options for sunbaking or finding a pleasant shady spot to sit in, I thought maybe a couple of trees could be trimmed on the beach front to let a bit more sun in but it was winter when we were there [25 degrees]. A great library. Good quality free kayaks for exploring the coastline and beaches, Matana is is also within reach for the keen kayaker to go to the local township. We enjoyed meeting the locals we paddled to the Vunicea to see the weekly ferry come in and even went to a 7s rugby competition at a local school. We saw some turtles in the bay which was great.
Not a place visit if you want bright lights and lots of noise, Matana offers a friendly relaxing holiday atmospere.

Rustic yet comfortable, this hotel provides cozy bures with awesome beach views and extremely friendly staff from the nearby village. Immersion in local culture was awesome (despite some “island time” issues…). New managers – Glenn and Sharon – became our friends and did absolutely everything they could to make sure we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Great diving! Great food! Unforgettable memories!

In April 2010, I have been staying for 2 weeks at the Matana Beach Resort. Matana Beach Resort is a beautiful place with a wonderful sandy beach. The beach is clean and natural. The bungalows are spacious and well aired. As I am an underwater photographer, it was important to me to charge my batteries every day. No problem, electricity is on from 5 to 10 PM and you can arrange for longer hours, if needed. The food is excellent, a lot of fresh veggies and seafood. They prepared twice the traditional Fijian meal, cooked in an earth oven, while I was there. It simply delicious.
I was travelling on my own, but had never to sit alone at a table. The guests all sit together, it's a family atmosphere. The new owners from New Zealand were there. The lady is from Germany, good for me, I am German. The garden is beautiful and full of flowers, the managers were welcoming and very helpful. The lady is Fijian and so I got invited to the nearby village to drink Kava. I felt very honoured sitting besides the chief of the village.
Kadavu is like Fiji used to be 20 years ago, that's why I loved the island. If you are looking for a lot of action and disco music at night, this is the wrong place for you. But if you want a family atmosphere, friendly people, good diving, go there, you won't regret it.
I will surely be back and cannot understand some negative reports about this place. Of course, it's not the Hilton. But I am not travelling halfway around the world to end up in a Hilton.. Hiltons you will find everywhere, but not an island like Kadavu and friendly Fijian people. Here you will feel at home.

It is a serene and beautiful location. The room was large and airy and its simple designs alluring. The Drue village people are the best - I was invited to dinners and kava nights, and enjoyed each and every conversation. My dive guide was the mayor of the village and it was an amazing experience.

But Dave the manager is a former accountant who doesn't know anything about diving, talks badly about the villagers, treats his employees badly (I heard and re-heard from the people in the village), is an unfriendly characther in general, and neglected to tell me the truth about his dive master in charge of the Astrlobe reef on the other side - that he is away for my entire stay. I had to initiate my own calls to other resorts which at the end didn't work out. The dive shop and boat is in dire need of an upgrade, as is the quality of the food.

This village deserves better, as do the customers. If you are there to dive - make sure you ask all the right questions before you go. It was an expensive trip for not accomplishing my aim for taking it.
