My husband and I stopped at the McKibbon House in August on our way down to Destin, FL for our vacation. We made plans to stop there because there are a few wineries nearby that we wanted to check out. Though the wine at the wineries wasn't all that impressive, we did have a great time taking in the scenery of the Alabama countryside!
We checked into our room, the Smitherman room, and it was lovely. You cannot really tell from the pictures on their website, but it is an adorable room. From the one picture on their website I thought it could have been a little overdone with the floral decor, but honestly, it was wonderful. Very comfy and spacious. Another reviewer remarked that it wasn't clean, but I'm not really sure what he is referring to. It felt pretty clean to me. The only thing I recall was that the shower in the bathroom had one of those bathmats in it, which tend to gross me out, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Leigh was there when we arrived and was incredibly accommodating. Very sweet and helpful. There was a couple staying there who were renewing their vows in the backyard, and they invited us to join them for it. We kindly declined, but we thought that was very friendly.
We then ventured out to the wineries, had a nice time, then headed back to Montevallo. We stopped in at a bar & grill in the "downtown" area. It was fine for what we were looking for - just a late night snack after a little bit of wine!
We slept well and we awoke to coffee outside the room, then we headed downstairs for breakfast. We sat in the dining room with the couple who renewed their vows. (They were the only other guests at the McKibbon House.) The breakfast was very good - definitely hit the spot and got us ready for the rest of our drive to Florida!
We did see the dog, but he wasn't around for breakfast. He was just there to greet us when we came in. Not a nuisance at all, and I am not even a dog person!
Overall, it was a very nice place to stay, especially if you are looking for a nice, leisurely place to stay during a road trip. Though it was very nice, we probably wouldn't go back there again, just because there is not much to do (that we knew of) in the town and it isn't right on the highway. Just something we thought we would check out because we had never stopped in that area before. But if you do find yourself in Montevallo or nearby, we would totally recommend the McKibbon House! Thanks!
