I guess if I hadn't read the very positive reviews, we wouldn't have booked with Kancil. The problem I think was because the owner, Mr. Daud wasn't there when we arrived. Instead of a very nice stay (which most of the reviewers raved about), we didn't really enjoy our stay. First off, we didn't know that there was a curfew and that breakfast wasn't free. In fairness to Mr. Daud, it's quite possible that some things got lost in the translation.

All said, our trip to Malacca was just doomed. There was frequent brownouts and the following day, the lights in my mom's room burnt out, thereby causing them to panic and rush out of their room.

I guess we just expected too much from Kancil.

We wanted to have an adventurous trip thus i chose this guest house to save our budget and to experience staying at this type of accomodation. the owner, daud was really helpful and friendly. told us the places we should visit and showed us direction. I can guarantee you that this place is really clean as im really fussy on cleanliness. the toilet was clean too.i would definately come back.

This guesthouse has a quiet, welcoming atmosphere. All fan rooms, clean and good beds.
In the back there is a garden to sit and relax.
The owner will make you breakfast en tell you all you need to know about Malacca and other places to go in Malaysia.
Rooms cost 20 – 50 RM.
I’ve enjoyed my stay there very much. Recommended!!

Everything written in Lonely Planet is absolutely right. Except that if your room is located street side : you simply don't sleep ! It's just above one of the main street of the town and cars and trucks run all night long. As the windows are very thin, you will be awakened several times during the night by the noise.
Second thing : don't forget your mosquito repellent !!
